Gabrieli Consort & Players
Paul McCreesh (conductor)It gives me great pleasure to offer the following review in appreciation of the inspired performance offered by Paul McCreesh and his ensamble of very gifted forces.
My review follows a few years of collecting various versions of the beloved Messiah, all with their attributes and flaws relative to my tastes in music. In capturing both Boroque style nuances and Handel's spirtual quality in the music ( yet with drama and force as needed ), Paul McCleesh and his very gifted forces earn my 5 star rating.
Vocals and orchestrations are beautifully and consistenly managed starting from the very first note. My applause goes in particular to all the soloists.
We enjoy one of the truly gifted Bassists where one hears the clarity and power of his voice. "The Trumpet Shall Sound" sounds actually triumphant and radiant unlike the dry and cumbersome versions on MANY CDs. NOT ON THIS ONE! Soprano soloists sing with heart and tastefully ornament where many over do this to a point of distraction.
One MINOR fault occurs in a couple of crescendos during the Hallelujah Chorus ( the final third or so ) in which the chorus gets drowned out by percussionists and brass solists. This could be due to imbalance in orchestra/microphone placement during this piece. However the chorus does return quickly and we return to a very rousing and spirtual finale to conclude part II.
Over all I am thrilled to own this CD after assuming I would not desire another. This is as wonderful, spiritual and enjoyable experience of an "authentic" version of Handel's greatness as we are likey to get. My others are slowly going to the back of my pile.
