I have been collecting recordings of the music of Saint-Saens for about 50 years and this recording of these 5 beautiful concerti are among the very best. Malikova is a great pianist with a tremendous sense of nuance and capable of all the dynamics that these works call for. And she is supported by Sanderling and the excellent orchestra perfectly. These works are remarkable for the extraordinary interaction of soloist and orchestra, so the hand-in glove relationship here is particularly important and rewarding. Of the modern recordings, Malikova/Sanderling joins Collard/Previn as the best recording. Also, Roge/Dutoit is very good. Avoid the absurdly fast Hough recordings which have no atmosphere or romantic sense. Every music lover should have this recording!
