Type o negative（O型阴性）是一只诞生于美国纽约布鲁克林的厄运派歌特金属组合，Type O Negative由主唱兼贝司手兼词曲创作者Peter Steele，吉他手Ken Hickey，键盘手Josh Silver，和鼓手Johnny Kelly组成。1990年Steele在原先的鞭挞金属乐队Carnivore的基础上和他的朋友Sal Abruscato（鼓手）建立了Type O Negative。乐队经历的20年间发行了7张正式专辑，两张Re-Release，一张合辑和两张DVD。

3乐队历史
起源
Type O Negative的成员最起初来源于一个叫 Fallout的乐队，由年轻的peter steele在1979年成立，其他的成员为John Campos,Louie Beato和Josh Silver。乐队在1981年发行了一张名为《Batteries Not Included》的EP，在大学电台里取得了很大的成功。之后silver离开了Fallout加入了Original Sin乐队，而steele则组建了一只叫Carnivore（食肉动物）的thrash metal乐队，Carnivore整个80年代中期都在美国东海岸的各地巡回演出，在发行了第二张专辑《Retaliation》后，乐队濒于解散。两年后steele找到了他的老朋友Sal Abruscato（type o netative最起初的鼓手），不久后silver也决定重新返回steele身边，再加上steele儿时的朋友Kenny Hickey的加入，一个新的乐队成立了。起初乐队的名字叫Repulsion和Sub-Zero，但是之后他们进行了一些调查发现Sub-Zero和O形的logo标志已经被人使用了，于是乐队决定命名为“type o netative”。随后乐队发行了一张EP，不久就与Roadrunner Records签约，1991年乐队发行了第一张专辑《Slow Deep and Hard》。
最初
处女作《Slow Deep and Hard》,一张“歌特”味道相当浓的专辑，内容上则是表现出人在最自然的情况下通过痛恨自己的方式来达到对爱的诠释。在淫秽地欢闹中尽露人内心的狂躁、残酷、温柔与神经质的本性。乐曲编排则巧妙而无懈地在极端暴躁的碾核风格，和带有浓重忧郁民谣的葬礼挽歌之间穿插过渡。专辑首次的出演安排在布鲁克林当地一家地下酒吧进行。现场当时约有300人出席观看,整场演出历时约2个半小时，但过于冗长的音乐和一个令人难以忍受的近半小时由乐队成员使用螺丝起子和管道钳猛力敲击舞台设备，以制造音效的歌曲间隔，致使在演出结束时，现场观众只剩下不超过15名。尽管如此，面对种种争议，T.O.N仍在1991年秋进行了他们此张专辑的全美巡游演出，但在堪撒萨斯的第九场演出后，乐队失去了当时最佳朋克艺人The Expoited的全力支持,巡演在未完成一半的情况下宣告失败，究其原因我们则要回顾极端音乐形式的发展：进入80年代末期，以黑暗，颓废，悲伤，及恐怖为代表的“歌特”文化运动在欧洲的影响力日见广泛，一向被视为另类音乐主流的朋克文化被动摇了，歌特形式的音乐开始渐渐显露出了它非凡的影响力，也正在此时，朋克音乐与歌特音乐之间的对立开始愈演愈烈了。待歌特音乐传入美国后，合成器(键盘)的大量使用标志着作为更加另类的音乐形式的它已经开始在这片自由的国土上扎根并向着不同的方向发展起来。而当时美国的音乐界仍然极力维护以朋克文化为背景的创作风格。在这样的历史前提下，我们不难看出此次Type O Negative美国之旅受挫是不无理由的。
与美国巡演情况截然不同的是，一个月后在歌特文化的发源地——欧洲，Type O Negative创下了巡演史上的一个空前成功。但后来由于无数次的炸弹恐吓事件迫使乐队将原定30场的演出计划在第28场演出后宣告结束，至此，极具争议的专辑《Slow Deep and Hard》在唤醒迷失的乐章中落幕，乐队返回布鲁克林投入下一张专辑的制作。也正是这次喜忧参半的巡演，Type O Negative有力地确立了自己成为将“歌特”熔融于摇滚流派的革新者的地位。
声名鹊起
在发行了第二张专辑《The Origin of the Feces》之后，乐队真正意义上的第二张专辑《Bloody Kisses》在1993年横空出世，这张试验专辑不但取得了广泛的好评而且最终成为RoadRunner Records历史上首张在美国登上白金榜的专辑。其中最具代表性的曲目“Christian Woman”它描述的就是殷诚的修女在上帝目光的注视下与魔鬼缠绵并在得到满足时开始动摇自己信仰的这段非常渎神的内容。也就是它大胆地叛逆，至使这张专辑在世界范围内销量超过百万，其意义已远远超出它作为一张充满创意和带有折衷学派风格的试验专辑的范围，它是乐队对恍惚旋律音乐结构的一次探索。乐曲的编排介于戏剧与摇滚两者之间，带有浓郁古典主义的过渡手法在乐曲的改革中可谓名噪一时。就在乐队庆祝他们的这张白金专辑诞生之时，Peter引发出一条暴露狂的新闻，Peter巨幅的裸体照片还荣登了当月《Play Girl》杂志中页，乐队因此更加声名显赫。
在意想不到的成功之后，下一张专辑能否继续这个神话使得乐队压力越来越大，乐队试图在商业和创意之间取得平衡，其结果就是1996年专辑《October Rust》的诞生。在《Bloody Kisses》之后，这张专辑继续进行欲望和感性的探索，其中既有"My Girlfriend's Girlfriend"这样轻松明快的曲目也有"Love You To Death."这样黑暗深沉的曲目，而且专辑中还收录了一首由Neil Young作词的"Cinnamon Girl"，还有乐迷们最爱的曲目："Green Man"。虽然这张专辑没有《Bloody Kisses》那样取得轰动的效果但是依旧登上了黄金榜，而且是乐队第一张登上Billboard Top 200的专辑。在乐队进行了一系列成功的世界巡演后，开始了第五张专辑的创作。steele在发行《October Rust》之后连续经历了几位直系亲属的死亡，他开始用酗酒来麻醉自己以减轻失去亲人之痛，这一系列的元素都体现在了1999年的专辑《World Coming Down》中， 这一次专辑的风格与上一张《October Rust》发生了很大变化，旋律更加粗糙缓慢。而歌词内容不再浪漫也没有了性的色彩，再次回归到死亡，吸毒，抑郁和自杀的氛围之中，而这一切正是此阶段Steele内心世界的写照，专辑发行后反响远不如《Bloody Kisses》和《October Rust》但是依旧进入了Billboard Top 200的行列之中。
2000后
2003年Type O Negative发行了第六张录音室专辑《Life is killing me》，这是一张曲风很复杂的专辑吸收了以前所有专辑的风格。专辑发行之后Steele因为招惹麻烦而入狱一段时间紧接着又因毒瘾太深进了戒毒所。2006年Roadrunner Records给乐队发行了一张精选辑“The Best of Type O Negative”之后便与乐队解除了合约。乐队离开Roadrunner之后与Spv Records签约，并于2007年3月推出第七张专辑《Dead again》专辑在Billboard的专辑排行榜中取得了第27位的成绩，这也成为乐队历史上所取得排名最高的专辑。 同年4月和11月乐队录制了两个MV“The Profits of Doom”和“September Sun”。2008年1月乐队发行了两种版本的《Dead again》，2007年乐队在波兰Przystanek Woodstock举行了一场50w人的有史以来最大规模的演唱会。
Steele逝世
美国当地时间2010年4月14日，Type O Negative的主唱贝斯手灵魂人物Peter Steele因心脏病发作去世，终年48岁。Type O Negative的乐队经理Mike Renault正式对外证实了Steele的死讯。
Steele曾在2005年时恶作剧般的公布自己的死讯，他在乐队的官方网站上宣称自己已经死亡，并把自己在官方网站下的照片附上了一张生卒年表“1962-2005”。此后，Steele迅速从媒体的视线中消失，他接受了戒毒治疗并在监狱中渡过了一段时间。不过这次Steele的队友已经确认了他的死亡。Type O Negative已经在网站的留言板上公布道：“乐队以及家人将在今天的稍后时间发表一份申明，感谢你们的理解以及支持。”
2010年11月Kenny和Johnny 接受法国音乐杂志Rock Hard采访时表示随着Steele的去世，Type O Negative也不会再继续了。
