Wishing to escape the superstar expectations that sank Blind Faith before it was launched, Eric Clapton retreated with several sidemen from Delaney & Bonnie to record the material that would form Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. From these meager beginnings grew his greatest album. Duane Allman joined the band shortly after recording began, and his spectacular slide guitar pushed Clapton to new heights. Then again, Clapton may have gotten there without him, considering the emotional turmoil he was in during the recording. He was in hopeless, unrequited love with Patti Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison, and that pain surges throughout Layla, especially on its epic title track. But what really makes Layla such a powerful record is that Clapton, ignoring the traditions that occasionally painted him into a corner, simply tears through these songs with burning, intense emotion. He makes standards like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)" into his own, while his collaborations with Bobby Whitlock — including "Any Day" and "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" — teem with passion. And, considering what a personal album Layla is, it's somewhat ironic that the lovely coda "Thorn Tree in the Garden" is a solo performance by Whitlock, and that the song sums up the entire album as well as "Layla" itself.

The album was transcribed on a Technics SL- 1200MK5 turntable with custom
modifications by KAB Electro-Acoustics using a Audio-Technica AT150MLX cartridge
with a MicroLine stylus. The preamp was a Carver C-2. Analog to digital
conversion at 24-bit/96kHz was with an E-MU 0202. Recording was on a Sony VAIO
desktop computer with a 3.0 GHz Pentium IV processor using Cool Edit Pro 2.1 at
32-bit/96kHz, floating. Cool Edit Pro was used to remove extra "silence" at the
beginning and end of each side and to drop and name the cues. Three clicks were
removed “manually” using Cool Edit Pro’s “fill single click now” command. Cool
Edit Pro's Clic/Pop Eliminator Preset "Hiss + Lots of Clicks" was used on the
last 17.435 seconds of the last track and on some of the gaps between tracks.
The two sides each disc were joined using the open append command. The 32-bit
image of each disc was saved as a 24-bit/96kHz image. QueListTool v1.7 was used
to extract and save the image cue files. The cue files were used in foobar to
split the images to wav tracks. Then QuickSFV was used to create an md5 checksum
file for the wave tracks. These wav tracks were deleted. Using the wav image
cues once again in foobar, the image files were again split into tracks, and
this time compressed to FLAC (level 8) and tagged. The FLACs were then decoded
and checked using the checksums from the never-compressed wavs. No differences
were found. This check is performed to assure no errors occur in encoding to
FLAC which some claim may happen with Hi-Rez files. The m3u files were created
with Mp3tag. The 24-bit/96kHz wav images were resampled to 16-bit/44.1kHz
in Cool Edit Pro using Gaussian dithering with a bit depth of 1. The wav image
cue file was converted to a wav tracks cue file using CUE Tools, which
only works if a 16-bit/44.1kHz wav image is present. Cue files for burning both
discs to one CD are included.
