REMASTERING NOTES:
-----------------
This tape, which is being called "Top Secret", has been deemed
to be at the very least equivalent to "Kurt's Tape" in sound
quality, and by the opinion of myself and many others, the
current best source of this session, for the tracks that are
not officially released. It is the smoothest sounding, has the
best clarity and "punch", best stereo separation, less gritty
and less overall hiss, and is overall the best source at this time.
There are a couple characteristics of this tape that could stand
to be improved, which is the reason for this remaster.
1) The tape has a deficit in high-end frequency. I used Pay To Play
as the source comparison between this tape and the official release,
for both Eq and Tape Speed. Those who prefer "Kurt's Tape" to
"Top Secret" mainly cited that the former has greater high-frequency
response. The Eq I have done, which is drawn from exactly the
discrepancy between this tape and the official release, solidly
removes that complaint as a reason not to acknowledge this
"Top Secret" tape as the supreme source to date.
2) Throughout the tape, there is a repetitive clicking noise caused
in all probability by the rotors of either the tape itself or one
of the decks used in copying it somewhere in its lineage, and at the
very least is most definitely caused by some mechanical issue.
I have effectively silenced this clicking, to no more than at worst,
1/10 of its previous volume, and almost completely. This clicking was
especially noticeable during the quiet parts of the songs. No more!
3) Lithium is missing the very end of the fade out at the end of the
song. Very shortly before the song cuts off, I spliced the correct
continuation of "I Kill You, I'm Not Gonna Crack, etc.." on to the
point where it was cut off, copied from earlier in the song.
I created a block of nothing but hiss from the tape (de-clicked as
explained in point #2), then copied the correct segment for
continuing the fade out of the song from earlier in the song, and
then faded it out so it matched the duration of the entire fade out
of the song as seen on other sources, and then reduced its volume
to match the volume at the chopped-off end of the copy on this source,
and then OVERLAID this segment on top of the block of hiss, and then
stitched this composite onto the end of the chopped off segment.
There is no less noticeable repair to this problem than using this
procedure.

REMASTERING NOTES:
All the over-driven segments of the soundboard channel were replaced
with the audience channel, after I compensated for the delay of the
audience channel, so as to maintain the same timing in the sounboard
channel. The audience channel was Eq'd so as to sound more like the
soundboard channel, ONLY FOR THE PATCHES IN THE SOUNDBOARD CHANNEL.
The audience channel was not altered in any way.
Aneurysm, Oh The Guilt, and Mr. Moustache, where the audience channel
is completely overdriven, as well as the beginning of Sappy which is
missing from this source, have all been replaced with AUD#1 of this
show. The segments containing AUD#1 have been speed corrected,
as well as Eq'd to match up with the audience channel of the main
source of this show, which I suppose will be called "SBD#1".
All the little clicks were neutralized. The soundboard channel was
normalized to -0.1db, and the audience channel was then normalized
to the same average power as the sounboard channel after the
soundboard channel was normalized to -0.1db. Therfore both channels
should be of the same magnitude.
I took the liberty of replacing some destroyed sections in the
sounboard channels of Oh, The Guilt, and Breed, by patching in other
sections of the songs' soundboard channel. This results in a slight
effect of a "Chorus of Kurts" or "Deuling Kurts", if you will, ie,
Kurt singing with himself in stereo, slightly out of time with himself
(which is his "fault" for not being exactly in the same time on
different verses, as if anyone is holding that against him. Indeed,
he's exactly in time with himself on different verses, but of course
his vocal inflection varies a bit. On Oh, The Guilt I have decided I
like how this sounds better than I like the sound of replacing the
defective part with the other channel, because on this part of
Oh, The Guilt, the audience channel is really overdriven, and the
AUD#1 source sounds more different from the soundboard than I would
like to hear.
All in all this has been definitely the most brain-bending and tedious
remaster Ive ever done, so it is quite unfortunate that the results
cannot be "perfect" since there are many segments of both the soundboard
and audience channels that are destroyed. All the changes I made were
based on comparitive remastering. There were no speculatory or
arbitrary changes made. Everything I have done has as much reason and
scientific accountability as possible, and everything has been executed
with precision and accuracy and finesse.
Thank you, and Enjoy.

Now that everyone has had a chance to get their fill of the raw version,
here is my remaster, defined by precision, tedious mesurement and
attention to detail, and several painstaking processes that I would like
to share with you as follows. I had to do a lot of tricky math on this one.
I will detail several of my measurements, and why simple A to B comparisons
of speed are not sufficient to correctly remaster this session.
Speed Correction
This was the most tedious part of the whole process. Let me be clear,
most speed corrections are a simple and straightforward matter of comparing
an known correct speed source with a known incorrect speed source.
Fistly, we have got official releases of Gallons from both the
In Utero import, and WTLO. The two sources are SLIGHTLY different speed.
In this case, they are 0.01% different speed. Very tiny difference, not
perceptable. So one might construe that if the two different releases
of Gallons, over a decade apart in their release, are so close in speed,
that the speed must be correct.
During speed correcting the various songs in this session, it became apparent
that the speed of this source WILDLY fluctuates. Both Milk It and Gallons have
PROGRESSIVELY DIFFERENT SPEEDS ACROSS THE BREADTH OF THEIR DURATION.
Both of these songs' tape speed dramatically slowed down across their duration.
So to begin, knowing that the officially released copies of Gallons are
likely correct speed, I isolated the beginning portion of Gallons that was
least affected by speed variance, and used the speed correction tempate
for that, on that to the whole Rio session. ***
With regard to the dramatic fluctuation of speed within both Milk It and
Gallons, in order to solve the problem, I divided each song into several
segments, and took duration measurements of each segment, and compared it to
thier officially released counterparts, and arrived at some shocking results,
detailed below:
Milk It:
Segment 1 = 0.854% speed difference
Segment 2 = 1.637% speed difference
Segment 3 = 2.361% speed difference
Segment 4 = 3.734% speed difference
Segment 5 = 4.540% speed difference
Segment 6 = 4.945% speed difference
Segment 7 = 5.218% speed difference
Gallons:
Segment 1 *** (original speed correction, differential not saved for documentation)
Segment 2 = 0.898% speed difference
Segment 3 = 3.027% speed difference
Segment 4 = 5.715% speed difference
Segment 5 = 6.678% speed difference
For Milk It, the speed deviation increases by 611% across the breadth of the song!
For Gallons, the speed deviation increases by 744% across the breadth of the song!
So as you can see, simply using point-to-point measurement of the whole songs'
durations is not a sufficient means by which to speed correct this source.
This is why I have gone to great lenghts to get the whole songs correct.
The rest of the songs did not suffer from increasing speed deviation across
thier breadth, and were a matter of A to B speed correction, and were speed
corrected to correlate with their officially released counterparts, song by song.
I feel the tape speed of WTLO is accurate, given the almost exact same speed
of the two releases of Gallons.
Eqalization
Since we all know that With The Lights Out is pretty much an all around
un-desirable mastering job, I used the original release of Gallons as an Eq
template for the whole session. Eq has to be applied AFTER and only after
speed correction, because if you do it before, you will be changing your Eq
once you change the speed because the frequencies affected will change after
speed correction. In additon, this Rio Tape is a different mix than WTLO or
the original release of Gallons, more markedly in some areas than others.
The most noticable portions are in Gallons, and I used a segment that contained
the least amount of mix differentiation to formulate my Eq template.
I also for the hell of it, formed an Eq template based on the WTLO source of
this session, and while I was impressed at the final outcome in similarity of
its tambour, I ultimately chose the original release of Gallons as my template,
for the the simple fact that I consider any official release not from WTLO more
valid than anything from WTLO.
And I always use a better source to make my Eq templates for lesser quality
sources. Anything else, whether it sounds good or not, is not accountable
because its not based on anything other than personal preference, wheras my
Eq's are always based on precision correlations, and that is what I want to
hear - accuracy and accountability.
Sound Patches
I fixed the sound drop-outs in Scentless Apprentice. One thing about fixing
drop-outs in NIRVANA songs is always true. The band is so in time with themselves,
that often there is little or no "smoothing of the edges" in a splice necessary.
Phase Alignment
As is usually the case with analogue tapes, the left and right channels
invariably end up slightly out of sync with each other. The greater the
difference in timing, the less crisp the recording sounds. They have been
restored to "dead-ass" perfect sync, as I often say when checking my own
work for accuracy.
Normalization
All tracks were normalized to 0.0 peak value, with the exception of
Very Ape / Gallons which were normalized together as a single continuous
piece of music. It is worth noting on these two songs, the level at which
Gallons was recorded is lower than the rest of the session.
So I know you have already downloaded this session and are wondering, God,
do I really need ANOTHER copy of this session, well my advice to you is that
if you appreciate the lengths I have gone to do to this right, you will
be pleasantly surprised at the results.
Enjoy,
Mike Wilkinson

Remastering Notes:
I consolidated tracks 17 and 18 together, since that "Jam" is really
just the 3rd verse of Endless, Nameless.
Equalization was applied using Scentless Apprentice from Muddy Banks as
a reference template comparing the two sources. Each channel was
equalized separately. Additionally, the stereo channels were re-aligned
back into precise sync. Although the distorted segments are still distorted,
the equalization is much more lively and realistic. This is a pleasant
upgrade I'm sure you'll enjoy.
If you could TOLERATE listening to the raw version, I think you'll ENJOY
listening to this remaster. If you couldnt tolerate the distortion on the
raw version, at the very least, download The Man Who Sold The World,
since I think its the best electric performance of the song, and as
presented here, I guarantee its the best sound quality electric version of
the song in current circulation.
