If you need music for trimming the tree or other holiday festivities, Holidays and Hollynights (HoloGRAM Recordings) by the Laurence Juber Trio is the perfect soundtrack and just a beautiful CD full of his delicate guitar styles. Juber, a former member of Paul McCartney and Wings, told AXS.com this new holiday CD is a long overdue follow-up.
“My first one, Winter Guitar, was released in 1997 and I figured that it was time for another,” he said. “I wanted to do a trio album that would give me some space to improvise, stretch out a bit. Christmas tunes are fun to arrange and it seemed like a good project to launch our own label.” He said he also wanted to record it during the holidays. “I've played on many Christmas albums that have been recorded in the summer. I long wanted to record one in December, when I typically have a bunch of the tunes under my fingers.”
The recording was finished in a very short time. “It was done in six hours of recording at Capitol in Hollywood, after a few local Southern California gigs to warm up. (We) went back in in April and had it mixed by the legendary engineer Al Schmitt, who gave it a big warm sound.” The album features Domenic Genova on upright bass, who Juber says has worked with him on hundreds of recording sessions for the TV shows Home Improvement and Roseanne, among others. Drummer Michael Jochum did too, he said, plus Jochum has also played with artists as diverse as Jackson Browne and Korn.
Holidays and Hollynights is filled with traditional Christmas songs such as “Deck the Halls,” “What Child Is This,” “Joy To the World,” “Blue Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bells,” all with Juber's acoustic playing and help from Genova and Jochum. And though the album does not feature the music of the Beatles, he manages to squeeze in what sounds like a very short little Beatles riff in an improvisational moment in “Frosty the Snowman.”
