This mastering of Icky Thump was made exclusively for vinyl and contains
none of the harsh limiting of the digital version. This album holds the
distinction of being the first to be mastered for vinyl from one inch
tape (search stevehoffman.tv for icky thump for more info).
This is from my own new vinyl copy. One notable post-processing note:
There is a LOT of bass on this album. Meg's kick drum sounds like it's
four stories high. This is all fine and dandy if you have speakers that
can handle it; my own subwoofer goes into fits trying to reproduce large
amounts of energy below 35 Hz. Hence, I have applied more aggressive
low frequency removal that I usually do to this recording such that the
very low frequency information (below 35 Hz) is somewhat attenuated. I
did not apply a pure high-pass filter - I set the noise floor on DeNoise
LF to the highest setting (-20 dB) which means that only energy with
an amplitude of less than -20 dB is removed. Hence, some of that bass
that you can only feel is still in there. I do not feel this treatment
detracts from the head-crushing bass on this recording. On my system is
retains the blasting impact without the overemphasis on the very low
frequencies which most speakers can't reproduce very well (if at all)
anyway.
