info
According to the book "Rocket Man- Elton John From A-Z" the Bread and Beer Band was a group of England's best studio musicians, formed by Tony King (a record producer and assistant at Apple Records). The band included Tony King, Bernie Calvert of the Hollies, Roger Pope and Caleb Quaye of Hookfoot (and Elton John's late 70's band), Jamaican percussionists Lennox Jackson and Rolfo, and Reg Dwight (later known as Elton John). This instrumental album was recorded during sessions in 1968 and 1969 and included Chris Thomas as a producer. This album was never released and featured psychedelic jazz interpretations of earlier hits. Elton John played harpsichord on "If I Were a Carpenter" and electric and acoustic piano on the other tracks. As I previously noted, this album was never released (although a couple of tracks from these sessions were, but aren't included here) and Tony King gave the master tapes to Elton as a 1976 birthday gift.

info
These songs were recorded as Demos to present the songs by these artists to other artists, to generate interest in covering them. These are excellent and not to be missed by fans of early Elton John. These songs fit right in with the albums "Elton John", "Tumbleweed Connection" and "Madman Across the Water". Tracks 1-7 feature Elton on lead vocals and piano, while tracks 8-11 feature Linda Peters (who became Linda Thompson, of Linda and Richard Thompson) on vocals and Elton on Piano.

info
Elton had only made his US debut a couple of months earlier on Aug. 25th at the Troubadour where he played 6 nights in a row before returning to the UK (presumably) to record Tumbleweed Connection which was released on Oct. 30. Next the band performed 5 East Coast concerts in Boston, Philly and Baltimore before heading out west for 1 show in San Bernadino, CA. and the 4 Fillmore shows. 2 days after the last Fillmore show, Elton and the band were in NYC at A&R Studios for the in-studio radio concert which produced the classic live album “11-17-70" (or as it was known everywhere else, “17-11-70"!).
This performance, only 5 days earlier, is very similar in feel and performance to that album - though that shouldn’t detract from your enjoyment of it one bit. Levels were a bit oversaturated on the original DAT transfer and were reduced to avoid any further clipping or distortion.

Quality isn't superb as the Santa Monica Civic has never had the best acoustics, but it is listenable and a very enjoyable show, played immediately before going to NYC for the 11/17/70 broadcast.
