The 3 Sounds
What’s remarkable about The 3 Sounds 1958 debut, Introducing The 3 Sounds is that the trio’s tight playing gives the impression that pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer William Dowdy had been playing together for years. There’s empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians here and Harris’ deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive.

The Three Sounds are perhaps an accurate reflection of the fickle nature of fame, going from 1 of the most popular of artists on the Blue Note label in the 1950s & 60s, but criticised for being rather tame, they lost their appeal & now are in comparative obscurity. With Blue Note re-releasing their huge back catalogue this has been slowly changing, as has the critical evaluation of them. The trio consisting of Andrew Simpkins (bass), Bill Dowdy (drums) & the main focus of the group, pianist & composer, Gene Harris. ‘Introducing…’ was their debut album & is also the best place to start with the Three Sounds. Their accessible mixture of light soul jazz, a touch of bop & even the occasional hint of funk is well displayed here. It is very easy on the ear, but that is not to dismiss it as being lightweight because the Three Sounds possessed an adroit style, which had deceptive depth.

This hybrid SACD contains 6 bonus tracks that were not included in the original publication, but were part of the master tapes, & in Japan, as Introducing the Three Sounds, Vol 2 had appeared. This publication is part of the 2nd series of 25 hybrid SACDs that are the highlights of the Blue Note catalogue. All tracks were recorded from the analogue tapes from the Blue Note archive in stereo & re-mastered at Analogue Productions in California by Kevin Gray & Steve Hoffman. Even the CD track is clearly superior to previous re-master & also the original LPs from the 50s.
