Об альбоме
Considering how good Tamar Braxton's Winter Loversland album is, it is ridiculous and almost unforgiveable that my first knowledge of the singer came from Roxxxy Andrews impersonating her in the 5th season of the always flawless RuPaul's Drag Race. How Love & War passed me by is beyond me. However, I'm here now and hopefully not to late to this festive party because Winter Loversland (love that title) is a heavenly treat that is sinfully good from start to finish. Tamar has managed to put together a collection of tunes that reflect her personality & the spirit of the season in a seemingly effortless convergence of musical magic. The title of the album sets the mood perfectly - that the cool, crisp possibilities of newly fallen snow represents what opportunities we have to love, to give & to be loved in return. It's a delightful balance of old school timeless elegance & modern day music trends - and one thing is for sure: Tamar's alluring vocals are the star that burns bright at the heart of every track. And at ten tracks long, it's just the right length to leave you satisfied yet with an irrepressible urge to start the experience all over again.
Opening track Sleigh Ride is actually a masterclass in how to introduce listeners to your album, it's concept and what to expect. It's a mid-tempo version that is set to subtle harmonies, chiming bells and finger clicking percussion that evokes memories of the sounds that the sleigh ride actually makes as it whizzes across the freshly minted snow. Tamar's voice is as pure and inviting as said snow, with a deliciously romantic hue to her voice that makes this track both timeless & seductive. When she lets loose at the end of the track, it's to euphoric effect that lets you know how jubilant she can be with her amazing vocals. The charming flirtatiousness continues on a bluesy Santa Baby, Tamar taking the role of coquettish vamp sounding perfectly at home amid that tinkling, mellifluous piano that plays off her singing with exquisite precision. Her breathy delivery only accentuates the desire within the lyrics while the indelibly 50s influenced instrumental brings a Mad Men Christmas sultry vibe to the song that is all too hard to resist. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town undergoes a revolutionary interpretation that brings a joyous r'n'b effect to the track - indeed, across the album Tamar isn't content to wheel out the instrumentals we have experienced on countless festive albums before. She deconstructs the song and rebuilds it in the style of her music where her voice will have maximum effect. That's part of the reason the album works so well - it's incredibly cohesive, feeling new and familiar at the same time.
No Gift is a gorgeous treat - rich, resonant piano provides the accompaniment to Tamar's evocative & emotional singing. What's incredibly clever here is how stripped back the track is, yet still feels grandiose and opulent. The lyrics of how togetherness & true love is all that is needed at Christmas are underscored by that celestial piano solo that allows the track to breathe & flow, filling in the space between the lyrics with genuine elegiac wonder. Tamar has never sounded so sincere and earnest, imbued with hope & optimism - and those stunning backing vocals make this track soar higher than Santa's sleigh. It's an absolute marvel of a track. The Voice continues to shine like that singular star on an acapella medley of Away In A Manger-Little Drummer Boy that will take you back to carol services in those huge cathedrals. It's delivered with a real reverence & humility that will remind of the true meaning of Christmas. The textured backing vocals on the Little Drummer Boy segment are musical alchemy, as effective as any instrument could ever be. Tamar continues to demonstrate her versatility on the Carpenters classic, Merry Christmas Darling, giving the poetic ode it's traditional melody whilst it luxuriates in a quiet storm ballad arrangement.
She's joined by her sister Trina on what may well be the album's most expertly harmonised track, The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late). Entirely acapella, the vocal arrangement is out of this world but of course it's no surprise that the two ladies would have voices that weave together so magnificently. There's not a note they can't hit as they bring on the melisma, but it works within the context of the (all too short) song, making it feel like the best Chiffons song never released. Tamar gives the album her second original composition (after No Gift) with the slightly seasonal She Can Have You - a break up ballad that feels like it could play any day of the year (& incidentally sounds brilliant played next to the Whitney evergreen, Same Script Different Cast). Tamar gets to give it her best angst and melancholy, giving this tune a downbeat, wistful vibe for anyone who's been dumped at the most wonderful time of year. "I don't care that it's Christmas/New Year's Eve, Hallowe'en", purrs Tamar with a real resolute steel in her sad sad vocals. She's realised her man is no good & booted his worthless ass to the door. But Tamar won't stay down for long & concludes the album with two standards that elevate the spirits once more. Silent Night and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas both shimmy with a refined dignity that allow for Tamar to deliver sensational expression with her remarkable inflection & tone. And that final note on the latter will leave you breathless with awe. It may run at a little over 30 minutes, but there's no denying that this is all the time Tamar needs to effervesce the spirit of Christmas into your own winter loversland.
