Just Coolin ' is a jazz album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers . The previously unpublished studio session of March 8, 1959 is scheduled for release on July 17, 2020 on Blue Note Records .
Shortly after the recordings for the Blue Note album Moanin ' , Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers toured Europe in November 1958, performing in Scheveningen, Paris and Zurich; they played in the line-up with trumpeter Lee Morgan , tenor saxophonist Benny Golson , bassist Jymie Merritt and pianist Bobby Timmons . Golson left the messengers after the tour and was replaced by Hank Mobley when Blakey went into the studio for another Blue Note recording session. [2]
The Just Coolin ' session was recorded on March 8, 1959 in Rudy Van Gelder 's Hackensack Studio and presents Blakey's jazz messengers in the new line-up. The six pieces on the album include three Mobley compositions ( Hipsippy Blues , M&M and Just Coolin ' ), a standard, Bernice Petkeres Close Your Eyes and two previously unpublished compositions: Quick Trick by Bobby Timmons and the anonymous Jimerick . The album, which was discarded at the time of its creation, was created for the new release by jazz archivist and producer Zev Feldmanproduced and released on CD, digital download and as an analog 180 g vinyl press by Kevin Gray. Just Coolin ' is the sixth in a series of Blue Note releases commemorating Blakey's centenary. [3]
It is not known why Alfred Lion has decided to cancel the session, writes Chris May, but was the probable reason that the producer live five weeks later the same occupation in New York's Birdland for the two-piece set At The Jazz Corner of the World added that includes four of the six titles that make up Just Coolin ' . When the Messengers performed at Birdland, the material - previously everything new for the band - was more familiar to the musicians and the ensemble passages were played more precisely, according to May. Alfred Lion, always an advocate of this accuracy, probably chose the live for this reason -Publish album and not studio session.
