Don't trust anyone under eighty. On May 12, 2016, Klaus Doldinger himself reached the honorable age and knows that if you want to celebrate the perfect birthday party, it's best to take it into your own hands. Avoid stale tribute albums on which other artists mess up your work. That's why he looks back at "Doldinger" himself. For this purpose, he takes up his personal favorite pieces from his entire oeuvre and supplements them with some cover versions.
The Giorgio Moroder of jazz wrote the soundtrack for "Das Boot" and for the novel "The Neverending Story". At the latest with the title tune for "Tatort" he had us all in our pockets. But these pieces are not the focus of the exhibition. He is much more concerned with songs like the 1982 single "New Moon" (" Earthborn ") or "Green Lagon" (" Passport To Paradise ").
Since celebrating alone is somehow stupid, guest stars Udo Lindenberg , Helge Schneider , Max Mutzke , Sasha , Nils Landgren and Dominic Miller stop by for a coffee. With cheesecake with cream, they watch together how the fragrant Doldinger puts the sweetest things.
Fortunately, the focus is on the instrumental pieces. Trombonist Landgren looks much better at the uniform sound of the long player than Mutzke. He does his best in Marvin Gaye's " Inner City Blues ". However, if you compare the version with the other top-class recordings ( Gil Scott-Heron , Maceo Parker , Etta James , Grover Washington, Jr., James Last ), which already exist from the song, this one remains quite pale-cheeked. The former Passport drummer Lindenberg mumbles his usual dusty young language of the 1970s through the blues finale "The Greiss is hot" (" Stark Wie Zwei "). Hi pops.
The meeting with Helge Popelge looks very different. Luckily, in " St. James Infirmary " he refrains from all pranks and focuses entirely on jazz. Doldinger's saxophone and Schneider's Hammond organ play harmonize so well that the night-drunk piece does not require any additional ballast. The "Soul Town" initiated by Landgren, on the other hand, sparked extraordinarily well. The " Abracadabra " new recording exudes a magnificent grace.
Despite a few weaknesses, "Doldinger" succeeded in making a successful break for the special day. The vinyl edition, released on September 23, 2016, complements the pieces " Circus Polka " and " Song Of Dying " recorded with Motherhood. So there is even a small treat on top if you subsequently join Lindenberg's wishes. " Hi Kläuschen. Happy Birthday. Don't panic. Your drummer. Hehehe. "
