Raquel Silva Joly, classically trained guitarist, arranger, composer and singer offers a wide and varied repertoire of songs from Brazilian popular music, and bossa nova in particular, selected according to a line of awareness that combines the personal and artistic history of the performer at important stages in the evolution of folkloric musical forms of Brazil. In this dimension, the intention is to convey the emotion of discovery to those who approach the MPB with new eyes, and to arouse falling in love with those who are already part of it for knowledge and feeling.
Raquel sings and plays on the guitar pieces more or less known, but all highly representative, of the Brazilian musical tradition, as it has evolved up to the present day, also under the pressure of cultural movements. that have characterized it over time (carnival, tropicalism).
In the artist's inspiration, passages by authors such as B. Powell, AC Jobim, C. Buarque, M. Nascimento Djavan, I. Lins, E. Lobo, J. Bosco follow one another, illuminated by that feeling matured over the years, by when Raquel, a girl of very precocious musical predispositions, approached the study of classical guitar and then deepened, also through targeted musical and musicological studies, the knowledge of MPB.
These passages speak of magnificent or miserable places, beaches, traditions, cities, carnival, "land", sometimes telling simple, common or extraordinary stories with irony, fun, or poetic intensity. And then there are words of denunciation of racism, hunger, the country's problems. And then again there are the feelings, the almost visceral moods, the great protagonists of all Brazilian music: pain, oppression, suffering, but at the same time hope, strength to react, pleasure, almost, to keep alive - through the saudade (something remotely akin to nostalgia) - that which no longer exists, is far away, or cannot return.
A flowering of key ideas and cultural and sound perceptions, this proposal by Raquel who, taking us by the hand and accompanying us among the rhythms and colors of Brazil, opens us the entrance to an ethnic mix of traditions, of souls (the three souls of MPB, black, European and Amerindian), of heterogeneous and sometimes contrasting rituals which, fused and reworked together, have originated an absolutely unique musical genre. In this mix the "black" element becomes fundamental, and remains the guiding idea, because it presupposes and spreads, a way of understanding and experiencing music, song and dance, as everyday elements and functional to many aspects of life social life of every single person and of the community in which he lives: work, courtship, prayer, storytelling, fun, "resistance", evasion, invocation.
An example par excellence of this "popular music" is undoubtedly the bossa nova, where poetry, the influence of jazz, the cultured and refined intellectual world of some composers and performers become popular when they perfectly reproduce general trends and constants , above all of musical composition and thematic "tradition".
And the bossa nova becomes even more popular, thanks to the wide inter-class diffusion and the remarkable success of sympathy and favor achieved both nationally and internationally. In this way, the boundary between cultured music and traditional music in this country often becomes imperceptible.
But the project goes further, illuminating that congeries of feelings, sensations, instances, musical concepts with the depth of Raquel's inner world, of his research, of his life. in order to vibrate the strings of many souls around the world, often unaware of the beautiful words sung in that splendid musical language which is Portuguese.
Sentiment, emotion, study, life, therefore, in an artistic breath dedicated to a musical and cultural universe to be rediscovered, to be re-evaluated.

bossa nova guitarist and singer, shows precocious musical talent coming up from childhood to the study of classical guitar, thanks to the gift of absolute ear.
After graduating, she devoted herself to interpretative analysis of the works of Latin American authors of the end of ‘800 (Villa Lobos, Barrios, Ponce). She specialized in the harmonies and rhythms of the Brazilian pop…ular music.
An intense concert activity, performing throughout Italy – even during special cultural events – and abroad (Austria, France, Germany, America). The starting point of the artist is a research done on the most beautiful Brazilian songs, with particular reference to the work of Baden Powell, A. Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Ivan Lins. The landing point is to revisit these great songs in a different key, very personal – though not entirely free from the canons of traditional Brazilian music – paying particular attenton to the nuances of harmonics in a constant attempt to merge with the expressive universe of classic scholar and contemporary jazz. Through her arrangements Raquel plays the notes and words of familiar brazilian songs, going from moments of pure energy to more rarefied atmospheres, such as those typical circular and hypnotic sounds of the berimbau…
