Об альбоме (сборнике)
Only 5 days after The Quintet concerts in California, V.S.O.P. was caught live again on tape in Tokyo's Den-En Colosseum for another Japanese CBS/Sony release. "Tempest" is a good description, for this CD contains more volatile ensemble playing than its Columbia predecessor; clearly some tighter bonding took place since the trans-Pacific flight. The notion that Freddie Hubbard is filling in for Miles Davis in a reunion of his old quintet does not have much relevance, for Hubbard is always his own man, in command of his reverberant tone quality & idiosyncratic flurries that owe very little to Miles. Only "Lawra" is duplicated from The Quintet, & there is the additional treat of hearing Hubbard's masterpiece "Red Clay" performed to a turn by this crack quintet.

By Stuart Jefferson TOP 100 REVIEWER on September 24, 2014:
This is a reissue of a live album recorded in Tokyo, originally released only in Japan in 1977. This is a different set from the 2 CD "Live Under The Sky" set which was recorded in 1979, also in Tokyo, Japan. The sound is very good-clean & fairly crisp for a live recording. This album is still available from Amazon as an import from Sony Japan.......
.......The 1st tune is a long (16+ minutes) look at what this band does best--straight ahead, post-modern be-bop. Everyone gets a chance to solo here & helps set the stage for whats to come. "Diana" is a beautifully played ballad with Shorter on soprano sax & Hancock filling in nicely on piano. The last 4 tunes are long (8+ to 14+ minutes each) examples of both the band as a whole & each player's abilities on his chosen instrument. "Maiden Voyage" had me going back to Hancock's original album to hear the studio/live differences, & this live tune is just fine. The fireworks are subtle here, yet a number of solos have a life of their own. The group interplay is something to hear. Even Williams relatively short drum solos are tolerable, even if you don't (like me) like drum solos. He plays just enough for fans to hear just how good he is.
If you like the later "Live Under The Sky" set this new reissue of "Tempest..." is equally good. The band was revered in Japan, & recorded several albums released only in Japan that have recently been issued by Wounded Bird. This group was never really liked by critics. While the band sometimes falls into some "heard before" patterns, this is still some fairly striking acoustic jazz from a period (the late 70's) when the pressures to play something "more contemporary" was bearing down on each player--especially on Hancock--who would leave acoustic playing for electronic keyboards & his next phase of music-making. Check out "Five Stars" (another originally Japan only release) from 1981 for another good example of this band. Also look for the 2 trio sets ("Herbie Hancock Trio With Ron Carter & Tony Williams", & "Herbie Hancock Trio") with Hancock, Williams, & Carter with some good intuitive playing, reissued at the same time as this album on Wounded Bird.

I prefer this disc to the in-print, selftitled VSOP album. Each track is excellent, with much-altered & original readings of tunes that you've heard 1000 times before. Eye of the Hurricane blazes. The Shorter ballad is my least favorite track, but only in comparison to the rest of the disc - it showcases him on soprano. 81 has a laidback heavy groove supplied by Tony, but it swings for the solos, & doubletimes as well. Maiden Voyage is interesting, & Herbie provides a Latin feeling with much of his comping - this tune also goes into doubletime during the solos. Lawra is by & for Tony Williams - they play the head, then he gives a clinic for about 6 or 7 minutes - his drums sound (& are) HUGE. Red Clay (from Freddie's album of the same name) is about 1 1/2 times as fast as the original, & once again Tony plays a tight funk beat. Everyone is in fine form on this 1; Freddie's lines smoke, Shorter's lyricism is at its best, Herbie compliments everyone & plays some great solos, Ron Carter's quarter note is THICK & he slides all over his bass, allowing Tony Williams the freedom to bend, stretch, & generally mess with the time & beat. The sound quality is SUPERB on this disc, especially for it being acoustic jazz in a huge colosseum. The only complaints I could see anyone having about this album is that they don't own it yet, or that Tony Williams wore a yellow jump suit when they played this show.
