About
TRIVIUM blasts back onto the scene with a third effort that is one of the best metal releases of 2006 and quite possibly the heavy music album of the year. "The Crusade" sounds like the record that METALLICA could have made during the height of its early years, and while some may be uncomfortable with frontman Matt Heafy's occasionally too-dead-on James Hetfield impersonation, his sheer energy, bravado and fire, coupled with the band's relentless onslaught of blistering leads, amazingly technical yet memorable riffing, and dizzying rhythms captures not just the best of METALLICA, but MEGADETH, TESTAMENT and a number of other bands from the glory days of speed and thrash.
But TRIVIUM isn't just a throwback: the band has a modern edge throughout their material, adding unexpected flourishes like the softer section in the middle of "Ignition" or even that song's lyrics, which tackle subjects like homophobia and warmongering leaders in a way that Eighties bands might not have touched. Meanwhile, songs like "This World Can't Tear Us Apart" exhibit a commercial edge while retaining the intricate and heavy guitarwork that gives the band its identity.
The best thing about TRIVIUM is the way the band balances its influences and its homages. While old-school speed/thrash is the cornerstone here, there are touches of European prog metal and even the modern and mainstream touches we mentioned earlier. Yet nothing sounds like a blatant ripoff, or a dated tribute, and the band's appeal can easily reach fans for whom its sound might be an entirely new experience. Best of all is the fearlessness and confidence shown throughout the album; unlike so much American hard rock of the last few years, whether it be nu-metal or emo, there is no woe-is-me, Mommy-help-me whining in TRIVIUM's sound. These guys are loudly and proudly doing what they love. Even despite its unnecessarily obvious title, "Anthem (We Are The Fire)" gets the fists pumping.
Some of the best tracks include the opening one-two punch of "Ignition"
and "Detonation", the slow-burning build of "Unrepentant" and "The Rising" and the blazing yet still catchy "Tread The Floods". And for anyone complaining about the quality of modern metal guitarwork, just check out the closing title instrumental. It's a virtual symphony of guitar styles, all meshing together in the kind of epic finale that used to be the hallmark of so many metal albums. This is one "Crusade" that every metal fan will want to join.

About
Sound: Following on from 2008's "Shogun", Trivium are back with "In Waves" - an album that takes them back to the days of "Ascendancy". I would think that the majority of Trivium fans agree that "The Crusade" was the work of a band trying to be accepted into the mainstream and forgetting the signature sound that thrust them into the public eye with "Ascendancy". If Shogun was the starting point in the revival of that sound then "In Waves" is the continuation and growth that we have wanted since 2004 and it's evident that the band have gone back to the writing and recording formula used on "Ascendancy". Gone is the Metallica comparison and in it's place Trivium have finally established their sound. The brutal screams are back, mixed in tightly with Heafy's improved vocals and this is perfectly complimented by new drummer Nick Augusto's blistering drumming. Corey Beaulieu is on fine form performing some gorgeous solos and riffs and Paulo Gregoletto is ever steady on bass.
Lyrics: Matt Heafy's vocal work has improved massively since "Ascendancy" and he easily switches between aggressive screams and clean vocals. The lyrics, while not quite on a par with "Ember To Inferno" and "Ascendancy" are excellent and certainly fit with the music.
Overall Impression: An excellent album by a revitalised band, their signature screams combined with excellent vocals. Trivium have finally shaken off the Metallica-clone label and can stand on their own as a band - proving they have the chops. New drummer Nick Augusto fits in seamlessly showing his skill set with some powerful blast beats and effortless drumming. Trivium fans - buy this album as Matt & the boys are back with a vengeance!

About
Widely tipped for greatness after the surprise success of their 2005 second album Ascendancy, but then briskly consigned to the metallic dumper after the shambolic dropped clanger of 2006's The Crusade, Trivium have had to reassess their cocksure youthful ambitions over the last decade, but Vengeance Falls suggests that they still have what it takes to become major players. Produced by Disturbed frontman David Draiman – a polarising figure in metal circles, perhaps, but one who clearly knows how to ambush the mainstream – this crackles with electricity generated by musicians who finally know themselves inside out: from the irresistible choruses and gleaming riffs of Brave This Storm and Strife through to the hulking melodrama of At The End of this War and brooding closer Wake (The End Is Night), Trivium sound supremely confident and thrilled by the end results of the somewhat arduous refining process their sound has undergone. Best of all, this is a proud and focused heavy metal album that eschews current trends in favour of great songs, massive grooves, blazing lead breaks and a disarming air of combative euphoria.

About
Despite being major contenders for a decade, Trivium have made a habit of taking subtle detours with each album and never quite nailing their colours to one musical mast. Silence in the Snow is hardly a radical curveball: the moderately old-school influences that drive the epic, stirring title track have long been present in the Floridians’ sound. The good news is that Trivium finally sound like the balls-out heavy metal band they have long desired to be; their previous indecision replaced by meticulous and focused songcraft, a refined contemporary crunch and a dash of virtuoso showboating. By far their strongest material to date, the likes of Blind Leading the Blind, Dead and Gone and The Thing That’s Killing Me deftly blend 21st-century oomph with the anthemic drive of Maiden and Dio. If they continue down this path, Silence might be remembered as the moment Trivium secured their status as modern metal greats.
