Swedish melodic rockers Eclipse are back with a new album, their fourth, titled Bleed & Scream. It's been a few years since their last album (2008's Are You Ready To Rock), but frontman/guitarist/bassist/songwriter Erik Martensson has been pretty busy contributing to bands like WET, Toby Hitchcock and Lionville. It sounds like he kept the best songs for Eclipse though, as Bleed & Scream quickly makes clear.
This is one of those rare albums where the band gets everything right. Eclipse has always had a great melodic rock sound, but here they just nail the perfect combination of classic `80s AOR and hard-hitting European rock. Think Journey meets King Kobra meets Europe meets Pink Cream 69. The guitar hooks are amazing, and the melodies lodge themselves in your head instantly. Martensson turns in his best vocal performance to date, and his songwriting skills continue to impress. And Magnus Henriksson is killer on lead guitars, serving up some blistering solos. Martensson and Henriksson team up on production duties and do an amazing job. Well, the proof is in the songs, and you can pretty much pick any of the songs on Bleed & Scream at random and find an absolutely killer single-worthy melodic rocker. "Falling Down," "SOS," "Wake Me Up" and the title track are particularly convincing.
There have been some really good melodic rock releases so far this year (Sunstorm, Hardline and Jeff Scott Soto come to mind), but with Bleed & Scream Eclipse jumps straight to the top of the "best of 2012" list. This is a must-have melodic rock album any way you look at it, and is easily the band's best album to date. If you like melodic rock - old, new, European, American, whatever - do yourself a favor and pick up this album.
