Choreography: Merce Cunningham: Interscape (2000)
Published: Edition Peters 67414 © 1991 by Henmar Press.
Manuscript: Score (holograph in ink and typescript - 57 lv.); Incomplete viola part (galley proof with holographic annotations - 2 lv.); Notes and sketches (holograph in ink and photocopies - 6 lv.), all in New York Public Library.
108 can be played with or without One8 for violoncello solo and/or with One9 for sho and/or Two3 for sho and conch-shells.
The composition uses flexible time-brackets with single tones, which should be played in a single bow, single breath, or a simulation of that (by circular breathing or imperceptible bow changes). Tones can be short or long, since the beginnings and endings of the brackets overlap. Long sounds should be soft, short ones may be louder. The piece is split up in parts with silence and parts with sounds: 0'00"-1'30", 14'00"-18'00", 32'30"-34'30", 35'00"-39'00" and 42'00"- 43'30" are silent periods, the others are periods of activity. In the case of a cello concerto the violoncello is heard in the silent periods. In this case it is called One8 and 108.
The percussion instruments are not named, but are distinguished from one another. All should be very resonant and are played by bowing or by playing tremolos. Cage mentions some possibilities like Chinese and Turkish cymbals, Japanese temple gongs, thundersheets, Balinese gongs and others.One8Category: Musical composition

Premiere and performer(s): November 30, 1991 at the Messe Stuttgart Killesberg (Kongreßzentrum B, Saal Straßburg) in Stuttgart, Germany, performed by Michael Bach and the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart. (simultaneously with 108).
Dedicated to: Michael Bach
Choreography: Merce Cunningham: Interscape (2000)

Manuscript: Score (galley proof with holograph and copyist's annotations - 12 p.); Score with letter by Michael Bach (manuscript in the hand of Michael Bach - 1+6 p.); Diagram (manuscript in an unidentified hand - 1 p.); Sketches (holograph in ink - 2 p.); List of time brackets and sketches for them (holograph in ink - 53 p.), all in New York Public Library.
The score consists of 53 flexible time brackets with single sounds produced on one, two, three or four strings, using a curved bow (developed by Michael Bach). All time brackets overlap, so the composition may be performed like a sound continuum.
Durations, dynamics and bow positions are left to the performer. Pitches include microtonal deviations, indicated by small arrows on the accidentals.
One8 may be performed with 108. In that case the title changes to One8 and 108. For other combinations with 108: see Two3 and One9.Two3Category: Musical composition

The solo Sho part is the work One9. There are 10 pieces of different and flexible lengths. All of them have flexible time-brackets for the Sho part and fixed time-brackets for the Conch-shell part. The shells contain water and by tipping them they might produce audible bubbles. The Conch-shell part contains 10 time-brackets, one for each piece, with a number (referring to one of the shells) and a superscript (giving the intended number of bubbles to be produced).
Either three parts of One9 with or without Two3 may be played with 108.
