Об альбоме (сборнике)
His person is small (as large as his spirit and heart are), brown, full of pockmarks, which one would call nasty.” If these words of Bettina von Arnim can be believed, words with which she once described Ludwig van Beethoven, one can hardly imagine that the composer could have had an impact on the female sex. Especially since there are further reports of contemporaries who also do not paint a fortunate picture of Beethoven, who was often seen shuffling through the Viennese alleyways in an unkempt manner. But the musician, who was also known and feared for his choleric outbursts, seemed to be a real womanizer, as confirmed by
Beethoven‘s childhood friend Franz Gerhard Wegeler: “For at least as long as I lived in Vienna, Beethoven was always in love and sometimes made conquests that would have been very difficult, if not impossible, for an Adonis. Not least during his time as a piano teacher, Beethoven would constantly have romantic affairs. It was entirely plausible that he fell head over heels in love with one of his students. Among these devotees was Josephine von Deym, whom he idolized not only with letters but also with the song “An die Hoffnung”, dedicated to her. However, this love connection was not intended to have a future.
Josephine belongs to the group of candidates, of which musicologists have since assumed that Beethoven wrote one of the most moving love letters of the Romantic period, not only in July 1812. To this day it is assumed that the anonymous addressee of the letter was also the recipient of Beethoven‘s only song cycle “An die ferne Geliebte” from 1816. But in the meantime, there is much evidence to suggest that the musical setting of six poems by a certain Aloys Jeitteles was commissioned by Beethoven‘s patron Prince Joseph von Lobkowitz, who had lost his Princess Maria Karoline von Schwarzenberg at the beginning of 1816. Which is why he then ordered a type of sound epitaph from Beethoven, in which the lonely lyrical ego tells of its despondency, its longings and its memories of the beloved.
The farewell of beloved figures, as sung about in the six seamlessly intertwining songs, was also the reason for pianist Alexander Krichel to examine Beethoven‘s “An die ferne Geliebte” in the transcription for piano solo by Franz Liszt. At the beginning of 2018, Krichel‘s grandmother had passed away, with whom he had a particularly close relationship. “I called her twenty minutes before each concert. And it didn‘t matter where I was or what time it was – she gave me her blessing. And this feeling of comfort that I feel on the podium had a lot to do with her”. This album is also dedicated to his grandmother, that, through music, tells the story of gentle heart pounding and wild heart racing.
