By Brummy21on 7 November 2003:
It is difficult to concentrate on writing this while I listen to Jochum’s Brahms 1st which just sweeps you along with its inspired conducting, wonderful orchestral playing & brilliant sound. These Jochum performances of Brahms’ 4 symphonies, together with the Academic Festival & Tragic overtures, are vintage 1970s Kingsway Hall recordings, remastered on a issue from EMI.
Eugen Jochum, steeped in the Germanic tradition, knows exactly how he wants these symphonies to sound & the London Philharmonic Orchestra rise to the occasion with playing they have probably never bettered, with producer Christopher Bishop giving them a sound to match.
A dramatic 1st Symphony is followed by a wonderfully lyrical 2nd & a warm & weighty 3rd. This set has replaced my Bruno Walter discs as my 1st choice listening for these Brahms symphonies – there can be no higher praise !
The earlier Berliner Philharmoniker mono set from DG is famous for its highly spirited performances.
This London Philharmonic set from 1976 has all the repeats in Nos. 1 & 2.
The best performances are, in my opinion, those of symphonies Nos. 1 & 4. Beginning of the 4th movement of No. 1 is powerful & the sense of expectation is carefully calculated, before the dramatic entrance of the “Beethovenian” theme.
No. 2 is nice but not at the same level of the BP version (beautifully fresh & lively).
No. 3 has a magnificently lyrical and clear Andante.
Profound & deep is the reading of No. 4, better than the 1953 version.
A lively Academic & a dark & profound Tragic Overtures have not to be missed as well.
Owning both cycles, I consider them altogether excellent and complementary
