Serpente Masjien is Sannie Fox’s debut solo album featuring Rob Nel on bass guitar and Werner Von Waltsleben on drums. Sannie Fox has released one other self-titled and critically acclaimed album with her previous project, machineri which was released in 2010 through record label Just Music and which featured the legendary Storm Thorgerson’s album artwork (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin).
True to her follow up of machineri’s album and her love of electric guitars as well as the rock and blues genres, Sannie Fox features a torrent of axe-wielding instrumentation and massive vocals on Serpente Masjien. The sound is powered by solid drum and bass as Fox negotiates a lyrical as well as dynamic journey over thirteen tracks starting with the stripped down Malian-blues “Get Gone” all the way through to the epic gospel closing track, “Call”.
Serpente Masjien was produced by Matthew Fink and recorded in two stages on either side of Sannie Fox’s tour to the UK in 2014. Tracking took place at Digital Forest Studios before ending off at Planet Art Studios. The album which is undoubtedly one of the strongest female rock albums to have come out of South Africa features the popular “Bottle in a Bag”, “Hip Heretic” and “Freedom” as well as a range of banging, heavy rock numbers like “Hallelan”, “Killer” and “No Bird”.
