О релизе
Permanent Waves is the band’s seventh studio album, released on New Year’s Day, 1980. It was recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec, and mixed at Trident Studios in London. The tracks were laid down just shy of four weeks, in part attributed to the idyllic working conditions of Morin Heights.
The album marks a transition from long, conceptual pieces, into a more accessible, radio-friendly style. “The Spirit Of Radio” is one of the most commercial songs Rush has ever produced, containing several different musical elements, even a touch of reggae. At the time, Alex recalled:
“We’ve always played around with reggae in the studio and we used to do a reggae intro to Working Man onstage, so when it came to doing Spirit Of Radio we just thought we’d do the reggae bit to make us smile and have a little fun.”
Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyrics leave a little to be desired: 'the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . .'Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless.
'The cumulative effect of end- less tours and obvious growth with each studio effort, Rush hit it big with this effort, delivering with their best material to date.“ (AMG)
'Spirit of the Radio', 'Free- will', and 'Entre Nous' were big FM rock hits. 'Jacob's Ladder' was another highlight.' (Rolling Stone)
