Notes about the group
The group playing instrumental chamber music was formed in 1984 to establish a new music making form in which certain elements of European music, folklore of different ethnics, modern jazz and that of contemporary music would be synthetized.
One of the determining elements of the Makám Group's music is the world of harmony created by playing together on traditional instruments of geographically remote cultures and sounding these instruments differently from the traditional.
By applying various musical means-rhythmical asymmetry (Balkan), complex metrical structures of higher organization (North-Indian classical music), various tonal systems, tone models (Persian-Arabic maqams), relative twelve-note system, repetitive character, hoquet-principle (African, Malaysian pigmies, mediaeval European music)-the group tries to present the common features in the music of different peoples and ages and tries to represent that various musical instruments of different cultures can be applied at the same time thus creating a certain kind of new quality.
