About
Renbourn's last solo album for the next six years overlaps with his Pentangle work, featuring Terry Cox playing hand drums and glockenspiel, with future John Renbourn band member Tony Roberts and violinist Dave Swarbrick.
The repertory consists of medieval and early classical pieces, interspersed with the expected folk material – keyboard works from the Fitzwilliam virginal book (transcribed for guitar) stand alongside traditional tunes such as "Scarborough Fair," which turns up as part of an 11-minute track that also incorporates "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker," with Swarbrick at the top of his form on violin. The album is entirely instrumental, but as with other Renbourn releases, one hardly misses the vocals.

About
John Renbourn's first post-Pentangle (or nearly post-Pentangle) solo album, joined briefly by fellow guitarist Dominique Trepeau and featuring further contributions by John James, is one of his most beautiful recordings, and also among his most spare guitar instrumentals. Some of the material is drawn from lute and harp sources, and it is ear-opening to hear some of the more familiar pieces among the latter (such as "O'Carolan's Concerto") transcribed for guitar, but Renbourn isn't above adapting themes from television commercials, either. The mood of much – though not all – of Hermit is one of serious introspection, as Renbourn stays generally within a classical guitar mode. He has fun with the material, and the CD booklet also includes musical transcriptions of some of the tunes on the record, for the benefit of Renbourn's fellow guitarists.

About
When the network did not exist and at the time of purchase music, I often faced sealed LPs, without oportunity able to listen them. How to choose and buy without a mistake?
Well, in my case I always depended on my instincts. Sometimes a simple but attractive cover was the final choice (evidently based on artists I knew). An excellent example is this double LP of “The John Renbourn Group”, knew about John Renbourn next to Jacqui McShee (Both from Pentangle). But there was a risk, because, I have a special and specific taste in certain type Folk style (instrumentation, performers, etc). This is a live recording in the US in the early 80s, a very controversial date for the recording system… The artificial sound of the eighties acoustic guitars (produced by the famous Ovation guitars, a sound’s disaster!). The other thing that worried me was the instrumentation, will there be electric bass or drums!?
Well, this time my instinct did not disappoint me! This is an traditional live capture: Acoustic guitars with classic sound, McShee’s crystal clear voice with proper instrumentation.
Mention aside is the recording quality, really 5 stars. In short, this is the Folk style that has always touched me.
This album is one of the honorable exceptions to which I refer in music after the seventies.
Fran Solo, MMXVII
Originally a two-LP set, this 70-minute concert CD recorded on April 16, 1981 in San Francisco features the core of the band that appeared on The Enchanted Garden — Jacqui McShee on vocals, Tony Roberts on flute, krumhorn, and pipes, John Molineaux on dulcimer, violin, and mandolin, and Keshav Sathe playing the tabla. The repertory is rooted, of course, in English folk music, including “The Trees They Grow High,” a beautiful a cappella number (“Ye Mariners All”), and “John Barleycorn Is Dead.” Renbourn’s playing is showcased throughout, most notably on “English Dance,” a dazzling 3?-minute guitar solo; “Breton Dance,” by contrast, is a vehicle for the entire band. McShee’s crystalline vocals hold much of the spotlight, and the disc is worth owning just for her performance, her presence making this as valuable as any Pentangle release.
