In the quarter century after the end of World War II Kirill Kondrashin was a fixture of Russian musical life, but he was often overlooked in the West due to his lack of travel, the gigantic shadow of Evgeny Mravinsky, and the Russian playing style that felt unfamiliar to Western ears, plus the often strange recording techniques used on his recordings for Melodiya. None-the-less some of those Melodiya recordings are now considered great treasures! I particularly recall how his inspired reading made me understand for the first time that Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony was definitely not one of the ass-kissings that so many Soviet composers were pressured into producing! Kondrashin’s was the first reading to make the message from the recent Hungarian uprising abundantly clear in Shostakovich’s appraisal of the 1905 Russian massacre!
Of course, due to the fact that the 13th had texts, there was no hiding the message. It was Kondrashin who was willing to step up when other cowered. When Kondrashin was finally allowed to emigrate to the West, he had a sadly shortened Indian summer wherein his great readings were performed and recorded under better circumstances. This 13th is a great example of what we missed with his passing.
