Celia Craig
English-born oboist Celia Craig studied at The Purcell School, The University of York and the Royal Academy of Music and emigrated to Australia in 2006, serving as President, Australasian Double Reed Society, 2007-2013. Celia has worked closely with Bernstein, Boulez, Carter, Adams, Berio, Ashkenazy, Gergiev, Haitink and many others during her distinguished orchestral career before leaving UK for Australia with her family in 2006, and was appointed Principal Oboe of the Adelaide Symphony in 2011.
Celia has performed as a Soloist at the Proms and at the Barbican and with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the jury for the 2015 International Oboe Competition in Tokyo and invited to adjudicate during BBC Young Musician of the Year and the ABC Young Performers Awards. As a chamber player, Celia has performed with The Australia Ensemble, London Chamber Players, Sydney Soloists, Jane’s Minstrels, and presented several recitals with Thomas Trotter, organ. Reviewers have described her as ‘eloquent’, ‘wonderful’, ‘beguiling’ and ‘charismatic’ with a ‘rich syrupy tone’.
Awarded a Scholarship at the Purcell School to study with Nicholas Daniel followed by a degree at the University of York, she continued her studies in London, where having been awarded two RAM Exhibitions, Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award, the Howard Craxton prize for Chamber Music and the Music for Youth National Oboe Prize, she was appointed an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1997 by the Directors.
Celia plays on a brand new Howarth of London ‘LXV’ oboe in cocobolo wood with gold keys.
