不同于以往的传统西部片，只从白人殖民者的视角来刻画美国西部的开拓史，从《辛德勒名单》开始追求客观公正再现历史的斯导，在这部《西部风云》中，从白人移民和北美印第安人两个不同家庭的角度来讲述这段宏伟的史诗，将两种截然不同的文化冲突、交流和融合体现得淋漓尽致。

移民者建设新家园的艰辛，和暴富、欲望都是此剧要表现的主题。一个是从弗吉尼亚州驾着牛车迁徙而来的车轮匠一家，一个是来自拉科塔部 落的印第安人家庭，他们将一起见证美国西部史上风情诗画与血雨腥风。当然，爱情、亲情、友情和健康绝对是任何佳作中永远也不可缺少的主题。和《兄弟连》一样，《西部风云》也是一部短剧，只有6集，共9小时。
