Cursive 成立于1995年，前身是 Slowdown Virginia， 主要成员是 Tim Kasher, Matt Maginn 和 Steve Pedersen， 加上后来加入的鼓手 Clint Schnase 组成了最初的 Cursive。 1997年，他们发行了首张专辑《Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes》，经过几年的巡回演出， Cursive 于1998年发行了第二张专辑 《The Storms Of Early Summer Semantics Of Song》，由于吉他手 Steve Pedersen 决定就读法学院，后来加入另一支乐队 The White Octave， 乐队宣布解散。但一年之后的夏天， Cursive 又宣布重组。
2000年来自 Lullaby For The Working Class 的吉他手 Ted Stevens 代替了 Steve Pedersen 的位置，同年发行专辑 《Domestica》， 这张充满实验性质的概念专辑让 Cursive 收到了专业人士和粉丝的追捧。
2001年大提琴乐手 Gretta Cohn 加入，但在2005年就离开了乐队，2001年乐队参与了 Burst And Bloom 的制作，2002年参加了 Take Action Tour 的活动演出。
唱片公司 Saddle Creek 于2003年发行 Cursive 的第四张专辑 《The Ugly Organ》， 这张专辑得到了评论家的认可，并在滚石杂志上得到了4星的评价。而音乐杂志 Alternative Press 更是给出了5分的完美评价，堪称乐队成立以来最优秀的专辑。
