Recorded in May 1971 (Beethoven) and in December 1979 (Schubert) at Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Wien, Austria
The criterion of re-mastering is to faithfully capture the quality of the original master tapes. Esoteric’s flag ship D/A converters, model D-01VU, Rubidium master clock generator model Grandioso G1 and Esoteric Mexcel interconnect cables and power cords, were all used for this re-mastering session. This combination of highly advanced technology greatly contributed to capturing the high-quality sound of the original master.

This is the sine qua non performance of this symphony. The critical thing here is the tempo. Many conductors take it far too fast (Carlos Kleiber, otherwise a fine conductor, is atrocious). Bohm lets the music set its own tempo, and it, as it were, plays itself. It flows effortlessly, especially the second movement. Playing it too fast negates everything "pastoral" about it. Only the storm movement is agitated. The rest is a leisurely excursion into the sunlit countryside. A picnic by a small stream; a sudden storm and then the sun again and a return. Bohm does it perfectly.

Obviously, a labor of love for conductor and orchestra. Every nuance of the Maestro's most sensitive and heart-felt symphony is offered with exquisite concern for balance and depth.I never thought I would find the flowing Andanteperformed in so dreamlike afashion - have been frustrated by it being too rushed before. But here it almost a bit too langorous! Picayune complaints: the allegro is also a tad lacking in brio. But overall, and far, far more importantly, this is one of the very best, most rapturous versions of the Pastorale you will EVER hear! Side by side with Bruno Walter's. And the sound quality (remastered from '71) is exceptional also! Accept no substitutes.

A cream-of-the-crop Pastoral that, though not quite achieving the remarkable level of organic development and luscious beauty that Klemperer and Walter achieve, is still a gloriously verdant and painstakingly-built artistic realm. Certainly, one of the greatest things that Bohm did along with his Vienna Beethoven 9 and Mozart Requiem. Sometimes he can slip into an indifferent, stodgy, metronomic pulse that detracts from the shape of the music- the Andante of the 6th is an example of this, where the principal theme is clunkily-phrased and even quite amateurish. It’s a burbling brook, let it flow and give it character. Otherwise, it’s solid conducting and excellent interpreting- even if you don’t care for Bohm’s style, you’ll want to hear the VPO in this work. The Schubert 5 is a pure delight that the VPO handles with effervescent sensitivity and Bohm sculpts with great imagination and effortlessness. The first movement tempo is absolutely perfect, and once you hear it that way most others sound far too rushed. It’s not Mozart, it’s Schubert, and it’s not so much about the “bubbliness” as it is about the melody lines. Not a big fan of his complete Schubert cycle (a bit bland in the 8th and 9th, try Marriner and Szell) but this 5th is a testament to the partnership of a world-class ensemble, a seasoned conductor, and a youthful, songful, perfect symphony.
