Об исполнителе (группе)
The Bossa Três was the first instrumental group of the bossa nova. In 1961, Luís Carlos Vinhas (piano), Tião Neto (bass), and Edison Machado (drums) teamed up to form the trio. They went to the U.S. to accompany the dancers Lennie Dale, Martha Botelho, and Joe Benett on The Ed Sullivan Show. They remained in the U.S. and recorded three albums in New York, which were released by Audio Fidelity in 1962 (one of them accompanying Jo Basile). The group continued to perform in jazz nightclubs until its dissolution. Returning alone to Brazil, Vinhas regrouped the trio with other musicians and continued to work, recording and performing throughout Latin America. The Bossa Três recorded with Pery Ribeiro in 1966 and, in 2000, with Wanda Sá.
Jo Basile was an influential French accordionist, composer, and later publisher and arranger during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. During his lifetime he sold millions of records and was a household name in Europe, and to a lesser degree in the eastern half of the United States. Basile was born Giuseppe Ottaviano Baselli in Somain, in northern France. His parents ran their own café that catered to the wave of Italian immigrants who entered the Somain, Nord region of France after WWI. They were music enthusiasts who passed on their passion to sons Giuseppe (nicknamed Joss) and Enrico. Both began playing the accordion when they were children. Their first gigs were playing for patrons in the café, but during their teens they graduated to playing weddings and other local celebrations.
After the Second World War, Baselli met accordion virtuoso Gus Viseur by chance. The latter had created the influential and now standard bal-musette style (he also influenced harmonicist Toots Thielemans). Viseur was impressed by Baselli's playing, and encouraged him to pursue music as a career. The two became inseparable. Baselli moved to Paris in 1950, and landed the gig that would alter his life's course: he was introduced to the French chanteuse Patachou, who was making her mark on the bal-musette scene, and first became her accompanist, and later her musical director and soloist. As her star rose, so did his. Baselli married Viseur's daughter around the same time that Patachou opened a café in Montmarte; it became the hive of bal-musette activity in Paris.
During Patachou's widely celebrated American tour in 1958 (in which she was acclaimed as Edith Piaf's chanson successor), Baselli's playing was noticed by and captivated Sid Frey, owner of the Audio Fidelity label. Renaming him Jo Basile, he initially capitalized on Patachou's popularity and recorded Basile playing French café songs and instrumental versions of some of her hits. It was the first in a long series of LPs (at least a dozen albums' worth) that all looked remarkably similar and fit right in with many space age pop/exotica records of the era: the album covers invariably portrayed Basile playing his instrument -- the material usually a certain country's best-loved songs and pop hits -- on a motor scooter with an attractive young woman on the back. Basile's brilliant technique, while readily on display, was unfortunately overshadowed by the simplicity of the material. However, 1964 proved to be a watershed year. Basile teamed with the great Brazilian trio Bossa Tres for the classic Swingin' Latin, and later Foreign Film Festival Cannes, showcasing the accordionist playing music by composers Nino Rota and Luis Bonfa in the company of American jazzmen Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton, Tony Mottola (as "Mr. Big"), Bobby Rosengarden, Phil Kraus, and Al Caiola.
My Name Is Barbra
In 1965, Basile left Patachou's band and became the musical director of French pop icon Barbara. This was fortuitous, as the singer had her own television program and Basile was a featured soloist as well as accompanist. The gig provided his introduction to French television. He not only wrote and arranged songs for Barbara's show, but for other programs as well, his tunes eventually numbering in the hundreds. Two years later he left the show and reunited with Patachou for an American tour, but the stress of touring and performing got him thinking about other ways of making a living with music. With his many compositions for the Barbara show as a guide and a prime résumé, he began composing and arranging for French television and film in earnest. But Basile also wrote dozens of pop songs. One of his best known is "Free Again," which was recorded by Barbra Streisand as the opening cut on 1966's My Name Is Barbra. During the last decade of his life, Basile started his own publishing company, Opaline, and hosted his own TV show called Le Monde de l'Accordeon, which featured the talents of gifted masters of the instrument; he also wrote and arranged for dozens of singers in French, English, and Italian and did session work. Basile remained active until he was felled by a sudden heart attack in 1982.

Об альбоме (сборнике)
Recorded in New York City, in 1963
Bossa Três, one of the most perfectly formed instrumental jazz bands in Brazil, accompanys Jo Basile, the famous French accordion player who rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s.
They carefully selected the best of the last 10 years of popular Brazilian music composed by Oscar Castro Neves, Sérgio Ricardo, Carlos Lyra, Vinicius de Moraes, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vera Brasil, all well known in the United States.
The melodies represent classic bossa nova. All the arrangements are by Jo Basile. Bossa Três adds that final touch of authentic Brazilian quality to the recordings, with the sensationnal piano by Luís Carlos Vinhas, drumming by Edison Machado and bass by Sebastião Neto.
Jo Basile, considered by many to be one of the greatest accordianists that ever lived, recorded numerous albums for the first audiophile label in music, Audio Fidelity. His repertory was vast, but mostly centered around themes of world music. Such as Moscow with Love, Buenos Aries with Love, Accordian di Roma and many others. Considering the numerous recordings and the consistency at which Basile recorded, the quality is very high. When Bossa Nova hit the U.S. in the 60's EVERYONE joined in to record their impressions of it. Many Bossa Nova albums from Charlie Byrd, Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra became classics. Jo Basile also recorded his own Bossa Nova album. This one recorded with the Brazilian jazz trio, Bossa Tres, is a truly underrated gem. It is quite possibly one of the greatest Bossa Nova albums EVER recorded. Sadly, even the most hard core Bossa Nova fans no nothing about this album. It has been out of print for decades. It has now been released from a company in Spain. I own the original 1963 pressing and I'm glad to say that the vinyl is still in top condition. Since Audio Fidelity is an American company, this release from Spain does not use the original tapes. As far as I can tell, it is a copy. The master tape is in stereo, and this one is in mono. My original lp is the mono release. It's a good copy, but lean on the bass, but clean and crisp. The only flaw is a skip in the second track. Clearly the tape copy had a damaged section and was spliced together for repairing. You lose about 3 seconds. Other than that, everything else is complete and had very good mono sound. Featuring songs by Oscar Castro Neves, Antonio Carlos Jobim and other Brazilian greats, Basile sets arrangements that are filled with verve and flair. The Bossa Tres were clearly inspired by their pairing with the great accordianist. The bass playing by Sebastian Neto is outstanding. He truly makes this a great recording. Listen to his choice of notes against the piano solo of Luis Carlos Vinhas on "Cry Your Sadness." This classic Bossa Nova song has been recorded by such great artists as Shorty Rogers and Walter Wanderley. This version by Basile puts those versions in the shade. This song is one of the highlights of this great album. "You and I", another Bossa Nova staple also receives another great arrangement. Again, of all versions I've hear, two different arrangements by Wanderley and one big band version by Claus Ogerman, this one beats all three. Basile and Bossa Tres give it such a rhytmic sense of swing and style is just hard to imagine another version topping this. If love Bossa Nova and enjoy Jo Basile, this album is a must. Even if you don't own a single accordian recording, this is an album to get. Trust me on this. You will love it. Though Basile usually plays popular easy listening music, he easily holds his own against the three jazz men from Brazil. A really GREAT, underrated, overlooked Bossa Nova album.
