      DECCA 公司出版的《Ultimate》极致系列包括多套5CD一组的主题选集，着重地介绍了各个时代的大师们最有影响力、最广为流传的古典音乐作品，其中包括贝多芬、巴赫、肖邦、柴可夫斯基、莫扎特、舒伯特等的必听之作。
      此外，该系列还以不同体裁作为类别划分，加入了古典小提琴、大提琴、钢琴、钢琴协奏曲、休闲古典、巴洛克、歌剧等主题选集。虽然这个系列中某些选曲的录音年份有些久远，但演绎者中不乏宗师级的人物，故欣赏价值也是颇高的。
      全系列由环球公司下属的德国 EDC压片生产，品质优良，而封面设计则简约而不失典雅。该系列比较适合初涉古典音乐的朋友欣赏、收藏，通过这套入门级的CD能对古典音乐有一个基本的、初步的认知和了解。而已是古典音乐爱好者的乐友，或许也能从中找到一些自己可能还没有听过的演绎版本。

      据拜占庭帝国和日尔曼人的记载，早在公元5、6世纪，一些以能歌善舞而著称的斯拉夫部族就已广泛散居在俄罗斯的欧洲部分。当时逐渐出现了以庆祝重大节庆和家族中的重要事件为主的俄罗斯民间歌曲和舞蹈。古罗斯时代流行的是歌颂英雄的壮士歌和音乐。
      随着基督教从拜占庭帝国传入，俄罗斯吸收了西方的教堂音乐，同时也学习了其乐谱记录方式。17世纪末，由不同的声部唱同样歌词的多声部（3声部至12声部）唱法从波兰和乌克兰传到了俄罗斯。从这个世纪的下半叶起，出现了宗教和世俗题材的多声部歌曲。彼得一世时期，最流行的是歌颂国家、军队和舰队的歌曲。
      18世纪起，欧洲音乐及欧洲记谱方式在俄罗斯立足生根。俄罗斯出现了家族乐队和剧院。最有名的是谢列梅捷夫家族和沃龙佐夫家族办的农奴剧院。18世纪30年代起在彼得堡建起了一个意大利式的宫廷剧院。1783年起开始在彼得堡上演音乐剧。其他小城市也照此仿效。俄罗斯作曲家在18世纪也已开始大批涌现。
      19世纪的音乐知名度要大得多。这一世纪最先出现的是阿列克谢·韦尔斯托夫斯基的浪漫曲和爱国曲，瓦尔拉莫夫和古里廖夫的浪漫曲。亚·阿里亚比耶夫、米·格林卡和亚·达尔戈梅斯基则成为俄罗斯古典音乐的奠基人。
      19世纪中叶，俄罗斯的音乐生活出现了新的高潮：出现了新的音乐活动形式，成立了俄罗斯音乐协会，该协会定期举办交响音乐会和室内音乐会。莫斯科和圣彼得堡均成立了音乐学院。由巴拉基廖夫、基姆、里姆斯基－科萨科夫（《雪娘》、《萨特阔》和《沙皇未婚妻》等歌剧的作者）、穆索尔斯基（歌剧《鲍里斯·戈东诺夫》和《霍凡斯基之乱》的作者）和鲍罗廷（歌剧《伊戈尔亲王》的作者）等激进的年轻作曲家组成的“强力集团”成了音乐生活的中心。
      19世纪的俄罗斯作曲家中有不少名字是值得永远纪念的。其中最有名的是彼·伊·柴可夫斯基，他创作了世界闻名的芭蕾舞剧《天鹅湖》、《胡桃夹子》和《睡美人》，以及歌剧《黑桃皇后》和《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》等。
      19世纪高水平的音乐文化稍后在伟大的钢琴家和作曲家谢尔盖·拉赫马尼诺夫和亚历山大·斯克里亚宾的作品中发扬光大。他们连同伊戈尔·斯特拉温斯基和谢尔盖·普罗科菲耶夫都是20世纪音乐的奠基人。谢尔盖·佳吉列夫请他们到巴黎举办“俄罗斯音乐季”的演出。他们的演出以大胆的创新和咄咄逼人的风格令欧洲为之倾倒。
