The rocket fuel burning through the uptempo “Mainstream Kid” translates into Carlile breaking free of any second-guessing or hesitancy in her approach. Working with producers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, who’ve been in her camp since her 2005 debut, Carlile approaches this album like it’s her first and no one knows who she is. Not that she throws away her finesse. “Wilder (We’re Chained)” centers on carefully fingerpicked guitars, chilling harmonies, and even strategically placed strings for maximum effect. A career highlight.
