根据英国作家J.R.R·托尔金1937年出版的同名长篇小说改编。又名《哈比特人历险记》或《去而复返-一个霍比特人的故事》。（原著中由比尔博本人亲自撰写。）

因此书而延伸出的《 魔戒 》和其后的故事，托尔金因此一举成名。

故事讲述记述霍比特人比尔博.巴金斯与巫师甘道夫和十三名矮人向东旅行横越中土大陆，寻找被恶龙抢占的属于矮人珍贵宝物的探险故事。

据目前证实，本片的第二部剧情将依据原著相关资料对小说故事进行延伸，讲述比尔博返乡乃至《魔戒》剧情开始之间六十年的故事。
