简介:
This is a one-time meeting of two legends that worked extremely well. Pianist Thelonious Monk and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan play mainly Monk repertoire, accompanied by Monk sidemen Wilbur Ware (bass) and Shadow Wilson (drums).
Sonically, the disc is a disappointment, because of the recording quality, and because the tapes seem not to have aged well. The session consists of a mix of stereo and mono tapes, the alternate takes being mono. Like on the "Monk's Music" and "Thelonious Monk and and John Coltrane" albums, the mono recordings sound much clearer and better balanced (though a bit too bright). On most of the stereo tracks, Wilbure Ware's bass is almost inaudible and the drums sound very distant and diffuse. For the mono recordings, a different, much closer microphone placement was used, resulting in the typical close-up and dynamic sound found on most Riverside and Prestige sessions of the time.
Sound: 1 for the stereo tracks, 3 for the mono tracks
This may be the best currently available version of this essential session, but like for other Fantasy releases one wonders why they chose this poor recording for SACD reissue, when there are so many audiophile gems in their archives.
