Crowning Conclusion
Now this is a grand conclusion if there ever was one! Christian Zacharias rounds off his prizewinning complete recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's piano concertos with the Coronation Concerto KV 537. The members of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, whom he has conducted for twelve years, have been his partners from start to finish.
Dialogic Process
In each and every measure we experience anew how the pianist and orchestra have grown together over the years. Every transition is just right, the orchestra alertly and naturally responds to the liberties taken by the soloist, and together they generate enchanting colors and engage in intimate dialogue.
Personal Dimension
The timpani and trumpets in the festive key of D major produce the special radiance associated with the Coronation Concerto. Mozart did no more than sketch the solo part. The complete part penned by somebody else in the first edition contains only what is absolutely necessary. Christian Zacharias designs his own version, and it holds a special surprise in store in the cadenza of the first movement.
Superlative Sound
The MDG recording of Mozart's complete piano concertos has also set standards in the field of audio technique. The release of the Concerto KV 503 was
the first serially produced DVD audio in highresolution multichannel sound. And four Super Audio.
SA-CD.net review by Polly Nomial September 7, 2012:
The cycle continues to shine glory on Mozart's music.
In common with all except that noted in Volume 8, Zacharias' cycle is pleasingly consistent & combines many of the compelling features of HIP-aware performance without dispensing with the beauty & tonal lustre that modern instruments have given this repertoire. Throughout tempos are relaxed (never too much) & yet Zacharias in both his playing & conducting keeps the music moving thanks to the infectious rhythmic lift he invests in each phrase.
Possibly a little too much relaxation in the opening of #12 (Zacharias is over a minute slower than the account here: Mozart: Piano Concertos Vol. 1 - Brautigam, Willens) has Zacharias flirting dangerously with tedium but the characterisation of the playing never allows the playing to slip the wrong side of the boundary. In fact, it is appealing that the relatively junior work is invested with as much time & care as the later works, here & in other volumes. A particular highlight is the depth of emotion that Zacharias gets from the shortest movement (the Larghetto to the "Coronation" concerto) without transfiguring into a Romantic-lite work.
The sound, all from 1, 3 day session in 2009, is back up to the usual standards of the MDG house.
Recommended.
