After the incredible job the Audio Fidelity team did with the Rage Against the Machine debut (see - Rage Against The Machine) I was thrilled to see them tackle the second album, as the existing masterings of this album all suffer from "loudness wars" compression. This is the only fully dynamic release of Rage Against the Machine's sophomore effort we have and it sounds, exquisite! You can crank it as loud as you want and it sounds better and better, so many albums of the past 20 years have been destroyed by aggressive dynamic range compression, hopefully Audio Fidelity tackle some more of them - I'd love to hear a fully dynamic release of Pearl Jam's Ten mastered from the original analogue tapes straight to DSD (as it appears AF aren't doing any more vinyl).
I haven't listened to the CD layer, it's mastered with the peaks closer to 0dB whereas the SACD has around 4-5dB headroom, but it's the same mastering and will sound fantastic whether you're listening to the SACD layer or the CD layer. This is an SACD hybrid so if you don't have SACD-playback capability, not to worry - load up the CD and you're good to go.
Hearing tracks like Bulls on Parade and Revolver here will put a smile on your face and make you want to pogo up and down, such amazing energy these guys had in the studio and now with this SACD we can hear it much closer to how it sounded to the producer.
Obviously this release is geared towards those who have decent hifi set-ups and on small boom boxes, in ear buds or factory car systems you may not appreciate the differences that this mastering offers, but if you have a decent set up then don't hesitate to snag this one before it goes OOP.
