约胡姆指挥 布鲁克纳3部弥撒 24-96 Eugen Jochum - Bruckner - 3 Masses
Bruckner's three later masses embody the deep textures and emotions of late German romanticism, and Eugen Jochum, the preeminent Brucknerian of his generation, captures the drama and the colours of this sacred music with the Chor und Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk, and while these performances do not quite match the heights of his Bruckner symphonies - or his Brahms cycle - there is still much to enjoy. That composer and conductor shared the same Catholicism helps to enhance these recordings as religious testaments as well as immense musical achievements.Of the masses, No. 3 is the most 'operatic', and therefore often the most accessible to modern, secular tastes, and it stands apart from the two earlier, more traditional compositions, but even in its power and purpose it cannot quite match the sheer splendour of the Bruckner Te Deum, wonderfully captured by Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, also on DG in a coupling with the 1st Symphony.
This is a fine recording, and if no soloist stands apart that is no particular weakness in a work whose original purpose was as a manifestation of deep, communal faith, and Jochum reveals just why Bruckner was the greatest German romantic composer of masses after Schubert.
