当我起初得悉奥勒冈州波特兰独立摇滚乐团The Shins灵魂人物James Mercer与火麒麟鬼才製作人Danger Mouse这两位彼此独当一面的美国乐手联袂组成超级组合Broken Bells时，还以为是他们One-Off形式的合作。但其实当他们在2010年春天发表首张同名专辑《Broken Bells》时，已表明乐队会尚有下文，所以亦随即在2011年带来了《Meyrin Field EP》，以示Broken Bells并非只此一次的组合。
三年后，再次走在一起的Broken Bells终告在这个2014年初带来他们的第二张专辑《After the Disco》。然而他们并不是要玩起甚麽的士够格舞曲与向舞池探讨，而是以其动听而忧伤的曲子，打造出一张派对后的Mood Music唱片——而Danger Mouse和James Mercer的共通点，正是同样喜欢忧伤的流行曲与好的节拍，他们认为如今的音乐要做到旋律与节拍得以平衡乃可遇不可求。
从当年的首张同名专辑裡所见，Broken Bells的音乐是由二人包办：James是主唱、结他及低音结他手，而Danger Mouse则负责鼓击、电风琴、钢琴、电子合成器和低音结他，但是没有採用任何Programming与Sampling。他们所树立出，是来得相当之有机性、旋律化、Groovy与有着复古电子琴音的美好独立摇滚风格。一如以往，这次James Mercer和Danger Mouse进入录音室之前，都没有准备定甚麽音乐素材，故第二张专辑《After the Disco》的歌曲，全是二人共同在录音室创作出来——在Danger Mouse的录音室裡有百种古灵精怪的乐器，他们就是每人拿起一件乐器，歌曲旋律就是这样谱出来。
即使主题曲〈After the Disco〉在幽美的曲子下点题地祭出甚酷的Electro-Disco / Nu-Disco曲风，但Broken Bells没有变成Daft Punk。专辑是以派对后回到现实的失落感觉，来带出对成长的反思，所以歌曲情感反而比过往为苍白忧伤。
先行单曲〈Holding On for Life〉是首属于Space-Age的Psychedelic-Funk歌曲，James的假音主唱Chorus被拿来跟The Bee Gees作相提并论。歌曲的MV其实是Jacob Gentry执导的短片《Broken Bells Present "After The Disco"》的浓缩版本，由影星Anton Yelchin和Kate Mara领衔主演，影片分为〈Part 1: Angel and The Fool〉和〈Part 2: Holding On For Life〉两部分：故事讲述落寞的Oliver(Anton)带着疲惫的身躯回家，睡梦中流落外星，遇上美丽的太空人Helen(Kate)，发生恋情。然后Oliver不理Helen的阻止登上太空船，并参与迷幻派对；在派对中Oliver因吸食了迷幻药而误认了另一女子是Helen、与她接吻，令Helen伤心不已；Oliver亦见到派对上人人变成了老人，包括镜中的他自己。而Danger Mouse和James Mercer亦有在片中客串，饰演太空船保安员。
开场曲〈Perfect World〉是由Motorik节拍驱动Synth-Pop作品，又有很80’s Pop的〈No Matter What You're Told〉，〈Control〉以Post-Punk式Bassline带出的White Soul曲风亦同样相当之80年代。〈Medicine〉听似60年代式迷幻流行曲，但却勾勒出Groovy的底蕴与有如Blur名曲〈Song 2〉的Riff。
更窝心动听的歌曲，则有迷幻流行Ballad曲目〈Lazy Wonderland〉，抑或〈Leave It Alone〉这首有着Soulful唱和的太空Folk -Ballad。而〈The Angel and the Fool〉更是绝对美丽忧伤得没话说之作。〈The Remains of Rock ‘n’ Roll〉则不摇滚，但却是Broken Bells今次最富电影感的一曲。(袁智聪)
Broken Bells gets ready to release a follow-up to their successful self-titled debut album. It’s titled After the Disco and is set for a February 4th release.
Broken Bells is an American indie rock band composed of artist-producer Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse) and James Mercer, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the indie rock band The Shins. Broken Bells compose and create as a duo, but are joined by a full band on tour. The live band included Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band sidemen Nate Walcott and Nik Freitas, and Jonathan Hischke and Dan Elkan, both ex-members of Hella.
Their self-titled debut album has sold over 400,000 copies domestically, putting the album at #7 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on iTunes. The album has received positive reviews. Rolling Stone magazine gave it a 4 star review and stated that it was “the year’s coolest left field pop disc.” Besides their album being among the year’s highest charting debut albums, the band had sold out gigs on their first ever tour.
