Bartolomeo Cristofori is credited with inventing the piano as we know it, this recording uses a reproduction of a 1730 Cristofori-Ferrini pianoforte (or gravicembalo col piano e forte as he called it). The instrument certainly sounds far closer to a modern piano than tangent pianos etc. in dynamic range and sonorities.
We can assume contemporary composers were seeking instruments of ever greater volume and range, the pieces here being written in the period 1730 to 1750 or thereabouts. Once you get to the turn of century, Beethoven would be demanding even more from the instrument!

London Early Opera continue their series themed around a typical evenings entertainment at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, with a second collection of works by Handel and contemporary composers of the day (William Boyce, John Stanley, Thomas Gladwin, John Lampe and Johann Adolph Hasse). Featuring performances by soloists Claire Bessant, Mary Bevan, Benjamin Bevan, Eleanor Dennis, Charles Mac Dougal, Nicky Spence and Greg Tassell, the programme evokes the carnival of music and entertainments that amused visitors in these London gardens for nearly 200 years. The booklet notes feature images and expert commentaries on the Vauxhall Gardens by author David E. Coke and as well as conductor and musicologist, Bridget Cunningham.
