专辑简介:
If you've been sifting through the numerous Hugh Masekela CDs listed here, hoping against hope to see just ONE containing the four sides he put on the North American singles charts from 1967 to 1969 for the Uni label, saw "The Best Of" emblazoned across the top of this entry but without titles shown and wondered .... could this be the one? ... well, no it is not. The tracks here, recorded in 1984/85 and first released in CD format on August 31, 1999 are as follows:
1. Don't Go Lose It Baby - 6:10; 2. African Breeze (from Jewel Of The Nile) - 6:00; 3. Motla Le Paula (The Rainmaker) - 5:45; 4. Pula Ea Na (It's Raining) - 4:28; 5. A Vuo Mo (Run No More) - 5:05; 6. Grazing In The Grass - 3:54 (a new recording of the 1968 # 1 Billboard Pop Hot 100 hit); 7. Lady - 3:30; 8. Politician - 6:13; 9. Brinca de Vicre (The Joke Of A Life) - 3:47; 10. Ritual Dancer - 4:50; 11. Coal Train (Stimela) - 17:36
Originally, tracks 1, 3, 4 and 6 were in the German 1984 vinyl album Techno-Bush (Teldec 6.25983), tracks 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 in the U.K. 1985 album Waiting For The Rain (Jive Afrika HIP 25), and track 2 in the U.S. soundtrack album Jewel of The Nile (Jive JL9-8406).
It's a great collection of his work with excellent sound reproduction, and is sure to be a hit with fans of the Jazz legend. But without showing the contents I suspect not many looking primarily for his charted hits in the U.S. were buying unless they were familiar with the release, since any devoted Hugh Masekela fan will tell you, finding all four AND their B-sides in one volume is impossible.
What looked, on the surface, to be the best so far in that regard was his "The Best Of" volume in the massive 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection which seemed to contain 3 of the 4 hits and one flipside, but on closer inspection you find that: the single hit version (# 71 Hot 100) of Up-Up And Away on Uni 55037 in late 1967/early 1968) was 3:28 in length, whereas that volume gives you the 5:33 LP version - the B-side, Son of Ice Bag, is nowhere to be found on CD; Grazing In The Grass on Uni 55066 (# 1 Hot 100 and R&B and # 15 Adult Contemporary in June/July 1968) ran 2:25 but the version in that volume ran 2:38; and Riot (# 55 Hot 100 in January 1969) on Uni 55102 was 2:18 in length but the 20th Century release was just 2:00. And there is no way the B-side of Grazing In The Grass - Bajabula Bonke (The Healing Song) was 7:47 long as it is in that CD.
So, in effect, those of us who look for the hit single versions of all songs are still looking in this case. And that includes the one charter that doesn't appear to be in any CD that I can find, 1968's Puffin' On Down The Track which was a # 71 Hot 100 that October on Uni 55085 and its B-side, Do Me So La So So along with Mace And Grenades, the flip of Riot. With just 8 tracks involved, you'd think SOME distributor would find room for them in one compilation.
As I say, this is a very nice collection of some of his best album output - but not his "best" in terms of his hit singles and certainly nothing I would pay upwards of $100 to get! 曲目列表:
