专辑简介:
There is a veritable gallimaufry of Holst: The Planets recordings. This one, from Bernstein's summer days with the New York Philharmonic, stands out. It was spectacular in its original stereo release and 4-channel Quadraphonic release. It is even more so here.
There are two separate qualities to this disc, one is the performance, the other is the newly re-mixed sound. Bernstein's energy and fearless drive for drama is unfettered. Every movement, "planet," has its uniquely defined character. "Mars" has never been more war-like (yes, it's a lease-breaker), "Jupiter" has never been more jolly, nor "Neptune" more ethereal.
When Louise DeLaFuente went back to the original multi-channel master tapes, she discovered sounds that had been suppressed by the LP manufacturing process, sounds never heard by the public before. The extended frequency and dynamic range all with more detail e.g. It is literally technically impossible to have the clear thumping bass of the bass drum survive the groove process. This is the stuff for which SACD was intended. There is very slight tape hiss, remarkably little considering the tapes had been in storage for 30 years before this restoration. Yet that little hiss is not enough to mar the natural reverb of Philharmonic Hall in 1971.
Overall, this may be the most outstanding SACD release from the early batch from Columbia. 曲目列表:
