All the other reviews have commented on the gorgeous (Pentatone) sound, the interesting ideas, or other recordings that compete for our dollars. I truely believe that Marc Albrecht has shown every competing recording that an excellent conductor who fully exhibits great technical command as well as leadership from the podium...and total understanding of the compositions can have the final outcome surpass all other recordings despite not having the Vienna Philharmonic at his disposal. Hey, this orchestra proves itself worthy of any music; just listen to the precise intonation, attacks, releases, and individual balances obtained and performed by a band of excellent musicians attuned to every nuance demanded of the music and by their conductor.
The sound is glorious, especially in full (SACD) 5.0 surround sound, but the understanding of the music by Maestro Albrecht makes this a total experience not to be missed by any Korngold fan. The music is, by itself, wonderfully exciting, but that it all seems to come together in a single complete package is a remarkable feat by any conductor, orchestra, and recording specialists. Previn and Downes (I own these too) each have their own ideas, but Marc Albrecht seems to have not just ideas...but answers.
