Dvorak: Violin Concerto in A minor Op. 53, Gershwin: An American in Paris
Two unknown names (to me) perform here. I took a chance on this disc for two reasons: it's an unusual and tempting coupling, and it's an SACD. As it turns out, I'm glad I did. The Dvorak Violin Concerto can often sound a bit wayward and rambling, with some awkward violin writing, especially in the finale, which often ends up sounding clunky and scratchy. Not so here. Lisa Ferschtman is an excellent player, coping with those awkward moments with ease, making them sound more comfortable - and musical - than usual. But the real star of the show here is conductor Mario Venzago. He makes more musical sense than usual in this piece, bringing a real sense of purpose and cohesion, with perfectly chosen tempos.
The Gershwin coupling also shows Venzago to be excellent. It is very exciting and beautifully idiomatic. The orchestra plays brilliantly, and the entire affair sounds as "American" as an all-American cast would. Only in the slow middle section, with its bluesy trumpet solo, does Venzago err with tempo choice...it's a little too leisurely for its own good and the interest and cohesion sag. But even so, it's so well played, the orchestra not for a moment losing concentration, that he almost brings it off. But it is the faster opening and closing sections which impress, and the rousing conclusion certainly gets the pulse going.
I listened in 2-channel, stereo SACD and found the sound all through very good - warm and spacious (perhaps a touch too warm), in a gorgeous acoustic. Highly recommended. 曲目列表:
