Although Ivanovsky's reading of this score is by no means the best ever heard, it is certainly the best -- and, insofar as I am aware, the only one -- currently available on CD. This is Shostakovich at his best. It would be tragic to allow this score to vanish from the repertoire simply because it was composed to (presumably) appease Stalin. Mere Communist propaganda it may well have been, but what brilliant propaganda it assuredly was!
