真实故事改编，聚焦意裔美国人Tony Lip(Vallelonga本人的父亲)，他是一个受过七年级教育的保镖，1962年被聘用为世界上最好的爵士钢琴家Dr. Don Shirley开车，后者从纽约开始举办巡回演奏，深入前民权运动时期的南方腹地。由于Shirley是非裔美国人，他们由“黑人驾驶员绿皮书”引导前往一些酒店、餐馆、加油站。这段旅程打开了两人的眼界，也扩展了他们生活的世界。
