The New York Philharmonic and Decca Gold launch new partnership with release of Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 conducted by Jaap van Zweden.
The New York Philharmonic will launch its partnership with Decca Gold, Universal Music Group’s newly established U.S. classical music label, on February 23, 2018, with the release of Jaap van Zweden and the Philharmonic’s performances of Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7.
This new relationship between a major label and a major orchestra will yield a series of New York Philharmonic performances that will be made available on CD and for streaming and download. Decca Gold will also take over the New York Philharmonic’s catalogue of self-produced digital recordings released since 2008, expanding the reach of Philharmonic performances from the past decade. Decca Gold will release six additional recordings in the 2018–19 season featuring Jaap van Zweden and the Philharmonic.
Graham Parker, President of Universal Music Classics and Decca Gold, says of this new partnership, “We are thrilled to work with such an iconic institution as the New York Philharmonic and to use our major label infrastructure to extend the listenership of this incredible orchestra through these recordings. We look forward to more with this innovative partnership.”
The first iteration of this partnership is the Philharmonic’s performance of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 under the baton of Jaap van Zweden, who becomes Music Director in September 2018. In a review of the concert, The New York Times stated that “Mr. van Zweden led a clear-textured, emphatic and, in the finale, exuberant performance of the Beethoven.”
Jaap van Zweden says of the recording, “The New York Philharmonic, Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7, and our new association with Decca Gold-what a great combination for our first recorded collaboration together! Our shared love of Beethoven, especially evidenced in these two great symphonies played by the masterful New York Philharmonic, gives a glimpse into our future and new life together. It’s a time of new beginnings, new collaborations, and a look into our future while connecting with our roots through Beethoven.”
