Circuital is the sixth album by My Morning Jacket. It was released on May 31, 2011, receiving mainly positive reviews.
For six weeks, leading up to April 12 2011, the band released free downloads of tracks recorded at their shows at New York’s Terminal 5 in October 2010. The final free download was the new album's title track.
"Outta My System" is a rejected musical idea that Jim James wrote for Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem in the upcoming Muppets film. "Slow Slow Tune" was featured in Gorillas in the Mist, an episode of American Dad!.
My Morning Jacket fans might well regard each new album with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. In the last decade, the Kentucky band has become as ambitious as Wilco and as experimental as the Flaming Lips. It also has shared the former's overreach and the latter's excessive whimsy.
However, "Circuital" glides away from the brink MMJ was heading toward on 2008's maddeningly diverse "Evil Urges." Jim James (a.k.a. Yim Yames) is still writing songs that quilt together eras and genres - "Outta My System," for example, drizzles twang over what could be a lost Who tune circa "Pictures of Lily"- but the hand holding the needle no longer seems restlessly jittery.
The band's steadiness makes the various changes of direction and wry little ornamentations delightful rather than daunting. The dainty plinking and fuzzed-out riffing make equal sense on the folksy "You Wanna Freak Out," while the horn-section grandeur of "Victory Dance" is tempered by the song's carefully maintained simmer. Fans and new listeners alike can follow this particular amazing journey without worrying that My Morning Jacket will forget the way back.

The album cover is a close-up picture of a Magic Tuning Eye fitted on old radio receivers in the 1930s. The purpose of tuning eyes in these radio sets were to help tune a station in at its strongest point on the dial. So when the perfect frequency was found, the Magic Tuning Eye would be lit up all the way (like the album covers). The percentage of light shown signified the strength of the signal.
