Posthumous compilation of Joy Division songs, released in July 1988.
It compiles the four singles that did not appear on the albums and also collects tracks from "An Ideal for Living", "A Factory Sample", "Earcom 2: Contradiction" and "Licht Und Blindheit".
The tracks from the appendix are only featured on cassette and CD issues.
Originally intended to be accompanied by a video compilation (The Substance Video) but never realised.
Peaked at no. 7 of the UK album charts and at no. 146 of the US Billboard 200 (the band's only chart appearance in the US).
The 1992 re-release by London Records features a new longer version than the original 12" mix of track 9 (also found on Factory compilation "Martin" (FACT 325) and Heart And Soul), while the other editions have the FACUS 2 version. Re-released again in 1999/2000.
This MR contains all official and unofficial releases and re-releases of Substance.
