About
There is an interesting divide in the reviews here…some think masterpiece, some fairly unenthused. I think this is Procol Harum’s best album. Every song is a winner, although the presence of three vocalists does provide a scattered feeling. However, there isn’t a weak track on the record, which makes up for the fact that Matthew Fisher and Robin Trower are workmanlike vocalists at best. Gary Brooker’s soaring, soulful vocals power the classic title track, floating on clouds of strings as he tells a tragic tale of the sea. There’s also some traditional blues (Juicy John Pink), driving blues rock (Devil Came from Kansas, the Trower-sung Crucifixion Lane), symphonic rock (Fisher’s Wreck of the Hesperus), folk balladeering (Too Much Between Us) and an odd little island-style ditty (Boredom). All is executed with a sense of style and fun, and the closing Pilgim’s Progress provides a feeling of epic fulfilment at the end. Trower’s phenomenal, raw lead playing is also worthy of note. It seems to me that Procol Harum was just a little too smart for mass popular consumption, which is why they never really capitalized on the giant success of Whiter Shade of Pale. This album is ample evidence that the group was one of the most creative bands of the early 70s. Just a shade short of a masterpiece, but mathematical rules tell us to round up, so instead of 4.5 stars, 5 it is! The best album by one of the best.

About
“Broken Barricades” is the 5th full-length studio album by UK rock act Procol Harum. The album was released through A&M Records in April 1971. “Broken Barricades” was recorded at AIR studios in London and produced by Chris Thomas. This would be guitarist Robin Trower?s last album with Procol Harum before pursuing a solo career.
The original album featured eight tracks while the 2002 CD Re-issue features three bonus tracks (Single edits and mono versions of some of the original songs). All eight tracks are high quality compositions brilliantly showcasing Procol Harum?s by now trademark style. Gary Brooker?s omnipresent piano playing, strong vocals and memorable vocal melodies, Robin Trower?s bluesy guitar delivery, Barrie James Wilson?s strong and busy drumming and Chris Copping?s excellent bass and organ/synth playing (classical inspired). The lineup has not changed since the release of “Home (1970)” but the tracks generally stand out more on “Broken Barricades” compared to the material on “Home (1970)”. Strong and memorable pop/rock compositions with just enough innovative ideas to occasionally be tagged semi-progressive.
“Broken Barricades” is a very well written and diverse album. Tracks like the powerful “Simple Sister”, the beautiful “Broken Barricades” (which features piano/keyboard work reminiscent of Genesis), the equally beautiful and string laden “Luskus Delph”, The powerful “Power Failure” (featureing an almost fusion-like middle drum part), and the psychadelic Song For A Dreamer”, represent some of the highlights of the album and at the same time display the diversity of the material. The whole thing is packed in a warm and pleasant sounding production. A 3.5 – 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

About
The Moody Blues "Days of future passed" represents one of the earliest collaborations between band and orchestra. Deep Purple's "Concerto…" also offers an early example of a live album involving both. For me though, Procol Harum's "Live in concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra" was the first truly successful integration of the sound of an orchestra into the music of a band. Both the albums mentioned above tend to segregate the two factions, with either orchestral pieces or band performances, but the two do not perform together throughout the album. The music tends to be either symphonic or rock, not a true blend of both.
On this album, Procol Harum use the orchestra simply as an additional band member. Others such as Caravan ("& the new Symphonia"), Yes ("Yessymphonic"), and the Moody Blues ("Red Rocks"), have successfully done so since in a live environment, but for me, PH were the first.
The appeal of this album is enhanced significantly by the track selection. Those chosen invariably lend themselves well to orchestration. The opening "Conquistador" has been transformed from a good rock track to a bombastic symphonic overture, with rousing bursts from the brass section, and an astonishing vocal performance by Gary Brooker. Brooker's distinctive vocals never sounded better than they do here, he's clearly enjoying himself! This would have made a great theme tune for the film "Gladiator".
"Whaling stories" and "A salt dog" are similar in pace and structure, both gaining an awesome majesty through the orchestration.
If side one of the album demonstrated how relatively short pieces could be greatly enhanced through the addition of an orchestra, side two presents the ultimate collaboration. "In held twas in I" was way ahead of its time when it first appeared on "Shine on brightly". Here it becomes a symphonic masterpiece. The multi-tracked vocals of the studio version are of course gone. While they were effective then, they tended to make that version very much "of its time". Throughout, band and orchestra play as one, building the tension, then breaking it, only to rebuild again. Dave Ball's guitar work is superb throughout; even when dominant, it is still controlled and melodic.
"Live in concert…" stands even today as the template for others follow when it comes to combining band and orchestra. It benefits immensely from the quality of the songs selected, but the performance also, is superb.

About
There are a lot of people who'll champion the Grand Hotel album, but as far as I'm concerned, it is Exotic Birds And Fruit that is the most complete album in the latter half of Procol Harum's career. In fact, I'd say this album is the best one outside of the classic first trio of albums.
One of the reasons for my unqualified seal of approval is the absolutely gorgeous As Strong As Samson, which is a heart-breaking, nihilistic song of beauty. "Psychiatrists and lawyers/destroying mankind/driving them crazy and robbing them blind" sings Gary Brooker as Chris Copping turns in his best ever organ solo ... another tearing, searing, yet emphatically melancholic piece. B.J. Wilson's drumming is top-notch on this one, rolling us all the way to heaven and back again. Every little nuance of this perfect, perfect song melts me. When Gary sings "there ain't no use" as the tune fades out, you know he's right. Aside from that brilliant track, Exotic Birds is an engaging, occassionally challenging hotch- potch of quality tunes. The band rocks out on Nothing But The Truth, Monsieur R. Monde (a reworked blues tinged-treatement of a track was first pencilled-in for the Shine On Brightly album) and Butterfly Boys (which starts off quite weak but is redeemed by some scorching work from Mic Grabham). It does a bit of a polka on the Balkan-influenced Beyond The Pale, it broods its way through the slow-burning epic The Idol, it pulls its hair out on the truly avant-garde The Thin End Of The Wedge (featuring all kinds of grim, spoken-word antics from Brooker), it winks and laughs through the playful Fresh Fruit. As for the stately New Lamps For Old (yes, stately in a Homburg/A Whiter Shade Of Pale kind of way) it is vintage PH. My version of album has the muscular B-side Drunk Again thrown in as bonus track and this "party" song doesn't detract from the quality of this fine album.
Even if I do feel that the one majestic song dwarfs the rest of the album, and I wouldn't say that this album catches Procol at its proggiest, this is still a very, very strong effort. ... 74% on the MPV scale.
