Back In Black
Released on 25 July 1980, Back in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980 at the age of 33, and was dedicated to him. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but they ultimately decided to continue and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on Highway to Hell, was again brought in to produce. The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and Electric Lady Studios in New York, where the album was also mixed.
AC/DC's Back in Black (Atlantic Records/1980) is nothing short of a true hard rock classic. The album's multi-platinum status confirms it's legacy in the hard rock ranks. Honoring the memory of fallen band mate, vocalist Bon Scott, the boys from AC/DC kicked our collective asses with an unrelenting assault of three chord metallic power throughout the ten song tour de force.
Clad in honorary black with an embossed cover sleeve, and backed with menacing blues-based hard rockin' riffs, plus scalding vocals from new front man Brian Johnson, Back in Black delivers the goods from the opening spine chilling, resonating bell ringin' tribute to Bon, to the final C-chord crash of "Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution". Back in Black is red-lined with ten ball bustin', no holds barred, lean 'n' mean, rock 'n' roll tracks, which includes the riveting "Shoot to Thrill", "You Shook Me All Night Long", and the tenacious title track. The music world was instantly made a better place the day the intense Back in Black was released for mass consumption.
Workin' E minor, A and D over 'n' over, the raging Back in Black rates as one of the all-time greatest hard rock releases. What more can be stated about this landmark effort from the boyz?
