Teaser
Teaser is the debut album from American guitarist Tommy Bolin. It was released in conjunction with the album Come Taste the Band by Deep Purple, on which Bolin also played guitar. Upon its release on November 17, 1975[, Teaser received considerable praise from critics. Unfortunately, due to Bolin's obligations with Deep Purple he was unable to promote the album with a solo tour and sales were affected as a result.
This album is cherished by fans for the broad range of styles in Bolin's playing. The material spans hard rock, jazz, reggae and Latin music, often blending these styles together within a single song. It is also considered by many to be some of Bolin's greatest recordings in his short career.
The song "Teaser" was covered by American hard rock band Mötley Crüe on the charity album Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell.
Van Halen would often cover "The Grind" live in their early club days.
Teaser is a brilliant, yet under-appreciated recording from the legendary Tommy Bolin. The 1975 release should be a part of any guitar player's collection... or any self-respecting rock fan.
Bolin displays his unique songwriting and skillful playing ability throughout the nine cut offering of diverse material. "The Grind" opens the Teaser set with an infectious groove, that pulls the listener in. Accented by David Foster's keyboard fills and backing vocals from "The Sniffettes", "The Grind" is pushed out with verve and confidence, setting a tone for the remainder of the album.
The strong intro track is chased by "Homeward Strut", an instrumental with a funky edge, while the five-minute "Dreamer" and the beautiful "Savannah Woman" lean toward the mellow side. The highlights from Teaser LP include the cocksure title track, as well as "People, People" and the hard hitting "Wild Dogs".
Tommy revisits the instrumental, with the jazz-fusion/Jeff Beck inspired "Marching Powder", which features synth work courtesy of Jan hammer. Teaser closes with the budding "Lotus", a complex track that spotlights Bolin's deft guitar skills and solid vocals.
Tommy Bolin was able to weave various music styles into his work on a consistent basis. Creative genius from a man who left us much too early in life. Tommy Bolin - we miss you... thanks for all of the great music that you created during your brief run.
Thomas Richard "Tommy" Bolin (August 1, 1951, Sioux City, Iowa - December 4, 1976 Miami, Fl) was an American-born guitarist who played with Zephyr (from 1969 to 1971), The James Gang (from 1973 through 1974), and Deep Purple (from 1975 to 1976).
